Intentional Departures from Canon:

Although I have tried to create Threshold in a way that strongly recalls Tolkien’s canon world, I have made intentional changes, the prime one, or course, being that Frodo has a major love affair.

But other smaller details can be noted.

The Bolgers.

Rosamunda Bolger has been created from her name and dates in the Took family tree. However, I changed her birth year from 1338 to 1346 ( for the sake of the projected story's long time frame). Her husband Odovacar Bolger is also fashioned from his name, but in the Baggins family tree. Since no dates are specified for him, I gave him ones of my own (born in 1420, like Primula, dying in 1496). Also, in the family tree of the Appendices it is noted that Odovocar attended the Farewell Party. In this story he does not.

Furthermore, in this story the Bolgers have long been frequent guests at Brandy Hall, in order that Merry, Fatty and Frodo might plausibly have become friends. But in “A Conspiracy Unmasked,” Fredegar Bolger is said never to have been over the Brandywine River.

The Boffins.

In canon, the Boffiins are not characterised in any detail. Folco’s name does not appear in the family trees. For the sake of this story I have made him the fourth of six children born to Jago and Pamphilia [Took] Boffin of Overhill. In this story, Folco Boffin is born in 1358, ten years before Frodo. He has an older brother Rollo (b. 1350), three unnamed older sisters, all married off, and a younger brother, Marco (b. 1366).
