Mechtild, have you tried just turning off anonymous commenting rather than making your journal friends only? This is what I did when I was being driven mad with spam and I haven't had one since, not even from a 'registered LJ user'.
Mechtild, have you tried just turning off anonymous commenting...
Yes, that works. I have several friends who have done that. My LJ has been friends only almost the entire time I've had it. I do occasional public posts, but not many.
That's the first thing I did. I was sorry to do it because I had at least one regular reader who had never registered on LJ and would no longer be able to comment. I told her in a reply before I did it -- turn off the anonymous comment function -- so she wouldn't be puzzled or feel offended.
That was very nice of you. A few people have unfriended me over the years and I never knew why. And I've always sent a PM to anyone I felt the need to unfriend. It's the decent think to do, IMO.
You should tell that person to get a Live Journal. *g*
That was very nice of you, too, Blue Eyes. Unfriending someone sounds like it ought to be a trifling thing, in the scale of larger life events, but it can feel dispiriting, hurtful even, especially if no reason is given.

I did, and she did. *g* She hasn't figured out how to work LJ, though. I tried to tell her how to get emailed notices sent to her should she want to follow my or anyone else's LJ, but she said she couldn't get it to work and didn't have the spare time to fiddle around with it any further. So I've agreed to email her when I post. I post so infrequently now, when Jan writes a new piece and to celebrate important dates like the Baggins Birthday, the Fall of the Dark Tower, and JRRT's birthday, that it's no big deal to send her an email. :)
I have two LJ friends who have never been able to get new entry notices to work so I email personally, like you do. They both receive comment reply notices, so go figure. Just another of LJ's quirks.
Ha ha! And there are many, ey? I have not been able to see any userpics for a few weeks. Support has sent me some help guidelines, but they don't work with our operating system. Ah, well. I guess I just won't see any more userpics. But I'm not renewing my paid account in March. What for? I only got it for the extra userpics.
I have a permanent account and believe me, I wouldn't pay for that again. I get much too exasperated with LJ. Can you not see your own userpics or none at all? I haven't heard of that problem before.
Since October 12th, I haven't been able to stay logged into LJ and I've written to Support about it twice. So far, nothing. I can log in OK, but about every ten minutes I'm asked to log in again. It's incredibly annoying. I have three different browsers I can use, have cookies enabled, have not blocked LJ in any manner, but it still happens. It doesn't happen at any other sites where I'm permanently logged in so I know the problem is with LJ.
I agree. It's not worth the money just to get extra userpics.
I don't have the log in problem, just the userpic thing. No, I can't see my own userpics or the userpics of others. Other people can see them, but not me. It started about three weeks ago. They had advice on their support line, which I followed, to no avail. They gave me subsequest advice, geared to two operating systems which we didn't have. I told them their advice wouldn't work for our system, but I never heard back. I figured that was enough.
I don't use any other journal and don't plan to. I'm really at the end of my fascination with online life, so I am not too fussed. I would be sorry, though, if my whole blog were disabled. Since 2004, I'll bet I must have spent one or two solid years of my spare time creating the entries on it. I did some nice work, and there are tons of Jan's super poems featured. I'd be very very sorry if it all bit the dust and no one could see any of it again. But I'm not going to pay for an account that can't even display userpics.
I turned off anonymous commenting, Paulie, and that was a huge help, but still got junk comments that come from LJ accounts that are used solely to post spam comments. If you click the User Info for one there are typically no entries and no information. You can block them, each time one shows up in your LJ, but they seem to just keep sprouting like weeds.
