I'm an appalling engine geek so I'm familiar with these. Check this out for one that was built quite some time ago:

Torpedoes often have wacky engine designs to keep the frontal area as low as possible. Swashplates get used a lot instead of crankshafts.
I have one of these and it runs on just the heat of my hand:
