Ariel Commentary pt.1

Dec 22, 2010 21:26

So, the episode starts with everyone gathering in the kitchen. Inara and Kaylee are having girl time(yay!) and playing some sort of domino fame, Simon's cooking, and Jayne is cleaning his gun.

Mmm, beefcakes and firearms. Someday, this will be me.

The beginning is my favorite part of any episode, ngl. This one isn't even my favorite beginning, but it still makes me dawww like the big derp that I am. I like domesticy scenes, sue me.

Anyway, Simon makes up what looks like bowls of rice, but apparently smells like crotch (Jayne would know, he spends a lot of time around them). Apparently, it tastes like crotch too, if Simon's face says anything.

This is the best crotch-rice ever. Now look over there while I spit it back out.

Anyway, Wash and Zoe - Canon OTP, will not break for ANYONE don't even THINK it >:| - come in playfully bantering about Ariel, the core planet the episode is named for. Wash wants a day off the ship to have a proper date, but Zoe refuses. Core planet means Alliance, Alliance equals government, and Zoe is a wild rebel. They don't mix well. Wash tries to enlist the help of the others, but all they can come up with is high culture and nature. (Though the bio-luminescent lake does sound fabulous)

Thankfully, Mal comes flouncing in to put his foot down.

I think he's being a bit paranoid about getting caught, but when you consider Simon and River are wanted fugitives, it probably doesn't hurt. They wouldn't be there if Inara didn't need to have an annual, guild-enforced check-up anyway. (Though you would think a Companion would want to get checked at least once a month, considering how many client she has. Just because you're rich doesn't mean you aren't susceptible to STDs.)

Anyway, banter occurs.

Personally, I don't like the set-up. It seems like it's just there to reinforce how uneducated Jayne is. I think the actual snark is great, don't get me wrong. I love the snark. Wash Snark is Shiny Snark. It's just- his tone sounds very condescending to me. Because you know what? There's been hints dropped that Jayne has a bit of a religious background (even if it's just church with his mother), and even more, he could have been speaking on general terms, like wandering around an abbey harassing people would have been more fun than staying on the ship. There really was no need for such a sharp cutdown.

But the conversation turns to discussing Inara's check-up, and how long they'd be dirtside.

Jayne molests a hunting knife.

Mmyeah, baby. Lick that shiny piece of phallic imagery!

Then hocks a loogey onto a whetstone, much to Simon's dismay.

I think Simon said it best - "Could you not do that while we're... ever?"

Hey, what's she doing?

Wash then makes a flippant comment about "just hating doctors~" while in the company of one, and then cheerfully tacks on a "Present company excluded, of course."

To which Jayne replies, "Now, let's not be excluding people. That'd be rude."

While looking at Simon.

Like this!

I think it's getting a bit gay in here, don't you? I think it's time to throw in some

Is it just me, or does that look like it hurts?

Freaked out and in pain, Jayne backhands River as hard as he can, sending her tumbling to the ground. Everyone else leaps to their feet and crowds around. Wash grabs River's knife. In the chaos, River calmly remarks that Jayne looks better in red.

Which is true, but- not when it's his own blood.

Now, the prevalent theory seems to be that she was just slashing the Blue Sun logo on his shirt, and his manly pecs got in the way. I'm down with that, but I also know all sorts of meta that Jayne does not. So far as he knows, he was just randomly attacked by Simon's crazy little sister. I think he's got a right to be upset, don't you?

Manly grimace of pain!

That cut was deep enough to require stitches. I think he has a right to be upset.

And also, shirtless!

Now, Jayne is not an elegant speaker. He swears and makes crude remarks, but when he says "That gorram freak's off her rocker," he's voicing a legitimate concern. I'm okay with Simon trying to defend his sister - I'd do the same if it was my little brother being insulted. But I'm not okay with the way Mal just dismisses his concern.

Yes, he brings up the bounty on Simon and River's heads. I can completely understand his thought process - protect himself and the crew, and make a little money at the same time. Why would you turn an opportunity like that down? Yeah, they might lose a medic, a valuable asset, but they can use the money from the reward to hire a new one. They, the core crew, Mal, Jayne, Zoe, Kaylee, and Wash, stand to gain a whole lot more than they lose. Sucks for Simon and River, but - they've only been on the ship for a couple months. People will be sad for a bit then get over it. It's not like they're close like the others are.

Oh honey, if only.

But Mal's not willing to give them up, so Jayne opens up a little more.

"They don't get gone, you better start locking up your room at night. Next time little sister gets in a murdering mood, might be you she comes calling on. Maybe Kaylee. Or Inara."

Concern for his captain. For the non-fighters of the crew. I don't think the reward is the main thing on his mind right now.

Mal's foot comes down in the form of "This is my boat, and what I say goes." It's not unusual for his dealings with Jayne, either, sadly.

Just one more of Jayne shirtless. Because I can.

gnome has thoughts on this matter, the man they call jayne, firefly, ariel
