I didn't think I'd be updating this LJ again, but I thought this belonged here ( Read more... )

I totally relate here. My first bun died of an infection. A simple infection that could almost certainly have been cleared up with Baytril, if I'd realized that those funny little sounds he was making sometimes were bunny wheezes, and the fact he was making them at all, let alone more and more frequently, meant that he should see a vet. He didn't, until the infection had spread through his entire two-and-a-quarter-pound body, and he was given about two weeks to live.

It's been ... twelve years now? I still miss the little guy, and hate the fact that he died over something so easily fixed. For the record, GI stasis? Not so easily fixed. I struggled almost daily with Teddy for six months trying to keep him from relapsing after the initial bout that happened completely at random, and in the end, I couldn't do a thing. Ted's the only bunny I've lost so far (he was the second of three) that I honestly feel that I did all I could for, and that I didn't screw up with my own stupidity. GI stasis can be brutal, and it's amazing how tough and how delicate rabbits can be, all at once.

So yeah. Learning from mistakes is good, but regret won't undo the past, either. The best we can do when we screw up is remember it, and try not to repeat it.

Holy crap... it's been so long since I kept up w/ LJ that I didn't realize that Teddy and Zipper had both died! I'm so, so sorry. :( They both seemed like such awesome, quirky little guys.

Your new girls sure are a great big pile o' cute, though! Congrats on your new era of bunny slavery! ^_^
