Summary: "Rango” is a visually beautiful animated feature that follows the adventure of a pet lizard when he first encounters waterless life in the desert. Although stunning to look at, the plot is tiring, the characters are flat and the comedic moments are as scarce as the water Rango and the townsfolk desire.
The Facts
Rango (Johnny Depp) is a lonely lizard that is thrown (literally) into the desert with no previous experience in the wild. He encounters an Armadillo immediately who tells him that he need to find “Dirt” to find water and leaves him with a metaphor about crossing the road. Eventually Rango makes his way to the desert town and encounters the feisty Beans (Fisher) and the spunky Priscilla (Breslin). He invents a tough West cowboy identity to impress the town and proves it via accident. The town is suffering from a drought and look to Rango for help. After chasing fake bank robbers, Rango is exposed for a fraud and banished. While in exile, he discovers the secret of the West and learns that the mayor of “Dirt” is behind the drought. He returns to “Dirt” to expose the mayor and bring water back to the community.
Thoughts and Opinions
The animation in Rango is stunning and impressive so it’s pleasant enough to watch, but the plot is drawn out and predictable. Like a typical Western, the characters are clearly “good” or “bad”. While that part of the character development was clear, what creatures the characters were supposed to be were unclear. There were also no scorpions, which is odd since they make up the largest percentage of animal life in the desert.
The humor in this film was virtually nonexistent. For a film that was sold as somewhat funny, it definitely did not deliver. There was less than a handful of truly laugh out loud moments and those were almost pitiful.
Overall, the film was just a let down. I was bored watching it and just felt like it didn’t deliver on my average expectations. Perhaps it’s better for children, but it just didn’t suit the young adult audience that occupied the theater I saw it in. I would not recommend spending money on this film
