It does take some time to get used to the idea. It's disorienting to suddenly find yourself in an unfamiliar world, isn't it? Unfortunately, there are many crazy things that happen here that can't be explained with logic or natural law.

You'll probably see for yourself before long, but in the meantime, there are many empty residences throughout the city. New arrivals are invited to look around and claim any unoccupied one as their own. There are a variety of job positions offered to provide income. I'm sure if you look around you can find something to your liking. It's also possible to start a business of your own.
