I think rock-awesome pretty much describes today.
The plan was, a bunch of the kids from my homegroup were gonna go meet up at the O-Dome (The O' Connell Center; our basketball arena, for you nonGators) at around five-ish to get in early and get seats (the doors opened at eight). Well, I had band tonight, and I wouldn't be able to get anywhere until about 8:30. Bummer.
So I get to band, and yeah, stuff fell into place. Someone asks me, "are you going with the basketball band tonight?" cause I was wearing my band shirt. It was a convenient piece of orange and blue clothing to wear, I thought it appropriate to wear tonight.
Well, as it turns out, the b-ball band needed people to go play with them. Not like I had the right stuff to play. I had my tenor, and I march alto. Their horn flashes are different and more numerous. But I saw the guys leaving for the band, and I was like, "porque no?" and went.
Good choice.
It was a little like performing in a halftime show you've never marched before. I basically had to play everything by ear, and hope I didn't look too out of place everytime I missed the first horn movement or so.
I was in my element. I'm no superstar, I mean, I'm not even sure I'm terribly proficient at playing by ear, but it's always been something really fun for me. Chris Knox, Jacob Ashton, Jason Walley... and numerous others, I'm sure, can attest to that. Heck, all the Niceville saxes loved doing it. Written parts were for weenies anyway. It's such a rush, when you hit that run, or phrase, or lick, for the first time, perfectly.
And then there was a game, too.
Lol.
It was kind've like watching the game in a really big living room, on a really big T.V. Except there were cheerleaders. And the band. And a couple thousand screaming fans.
And then there was the fact that we won. And by "won," I mean beat the living daylights out of. Poor Ookla. We just got like 10 points ahead and never looked back. Offense wins games, defense wins championships? Mmhmm, whatever you say, Bruins.
And University, by the Swamp (Not THE Swamp, but the Swamp, the restaurant). What beautiful mayhem. Words can't and won't do it justice. I definitely got to see a SWAT team, all ready for action. I don't doubt that for many Gainesvillans, this is one hangover that'll take 'til Thursday to wear off.
Rock-awesome.
Gator Basketball, 2006 NCAA Champs!
Faaaantastic!!
