Today was the second day of class. We learned about the basics of sound. Needless to say there were much note taking in the past four hours. But looking back and compared to how much notes I have taken in a the past through one hour of class, today was nothing at all. I must be out of shape. But more importantly I want to say how happy I am to be here. Aside from the award winning staff who have worked in the industry for at least 9 years: like Brock who wrote the manual to the industry standard music sequencer Logic Pro, or others who have recorded many bands back then and now, there are the equipments that are just top of the line stuff. Did I mention they have a one million dollar console? Yeah, SSL as it is known. Apparently that particular SSL Console in the Tempe facility have been used to record two Metalica Albums. Classic. There was a guy sitting in as a Teacher Assistant who was called upon to confirm that Paris Hilton can't sing. It seems that he was the engineer who did the her first album. And shrugs it off as one of his gigs, and confirms that she can't sing. Amazing. It seems that things like this happen all the time, this is the place to be, where the working with artists and industrial giants are just part of the day.
My classmates seem like the type who really didn't do well, in high school. Around half of my classmates smoke (age ranging from 18 to 24). Most of them already openly admit that they do drugs and underage drinking. How funny it would seem that these bunch of guys and two girls will in 8 months be the envy of all people who are fans of the artists they will engineer. I won't knock them, since this is a whole new playing field. These people want to be here, they paid to be here. Their passion sets them apart from those other losers who do nothing but waste away without a dream. Suckers. It would be nice if they didn't smoke so much though.
I made a few more friends along the way. I really don't see why I wouldn't be friends with every single one of them before the end of the first cycle. In the past couple of days I met Matt, and Tim. I have met them before, but yesterday we actually hung out. I don't think I have had as much time in IHOP than ever before. They are all characters. Aside from bobbie, who is a mac using, WOW playing, Hard Rock, loving fool. Matt owns around 1500 dollars of equipment and already had an internship lined up in LA, but in order to solidify his knowledge and certification, he moved back here and goes to the school. He is also a mac user. Tim, a jolly chubby guy, who drinks and smokes and maybe one of the funniest person I have met so far. He is also a mac user, although new, Matt, Bobbie and I make fun of his MacBook (we all have MacBook Pros.)
Today's class was pretty hard compared to the last class yesterday. There were much more things to write down and to memorize. We need to know the seven characteristics of sound, the elements in the envelope of sound and of course about Harmonics and so on. I would say there was a good chunk of information we will need absorb by this friday, since there will be a quiz on it. I would laugh at those who complained about how much information we will needed to write down, if I wasn't so out of shape at taking notes. It was natural to want to study after class, so we organized a quick study group after class, but before we did we had to go eat. So, the four guys (including myself) drove to the weed shop of sandwiches. Chiba's Hut was the name and hemp was the game. All I can say is that they make good sandwiches...and the people who made them are quite...friendly. So, after a quick meal we headed back roaring in laughter and arrived back on campus. Since Tim wanted to smoke, we set up around the smoking area, and was met by Morgan, one of our classmates. We then decided to go into a classroom to study. Needless to say we managed to finish half of our assignment and then laughed the other away till around ten PM. It could of been more productive, but oh well. I think I do better studying alone. What a lively bunch.
One thing that amuses me is the name we associate a person with. Strangely enough there is only one person in our class is actually from Arizona, the rest are from all parts of the country. As we introduce ourselves we include our name, the state that we come from and why we are here. Curiously enough most people forget their actual names, but not the state they are from, in result their home state becomes their name. Fortunately there are three Washingtonians among us, so it made it harder to just call us all WA. I certainly didn't want to be called "Silverdale." In any case I think I know most of the names of my classmates and so far we get along just fine.
Tomorrow is thanksgiving, I get one day off from school. And guess what I will be doing? Studying! Hurrah. What about food? As it turns out there in my apartment there is a thanksgiving feast that will be served tomorrow. I plan on mooching off of that. I am also accompanying Ren to a store to buy a computer. Ren is from Seattle, so in that sense we can relate...well about the weather anyways. He is a DJ, and has done number of things for other artists, I wouldn't be surprised if he has done things for bigger names. That seems to be the norma around here. In essence these people who go here are people who know exactly what they are top of the class at whatever their thing is. Conservatory of Recording Arts and Science is the number one school for audio. As Matt put it, "it is the Harvard of recording schools." Well put Matt. It would be fun to see Ren's gear. Oh, and he also uses a Mac.
There are many more things to say, but it escapes me at the moment. I will have no problem keeping busy around here. I still have no internet, I am still living alone, and I am still alive. Life is good...well, except the no internet access part. Pfffft, who needs internet?
I do.
