There are five dangerous faults which may affect a general:

(1)Recklessness, which leads to destruction;
(2) Cowardice, which leads to capture;
(3)A hasty temper, which can be provoked by insults;
(4)A delicacy of honour which is sensitive to shame;
(5) Over-Solicitude for his men, which exposes him to worry and trouble.

These are the five besetting sins of a general, ruinous to the conduct of war.

Do not fear for your soldiers; Place your army in deadly peril, and it will survive; plunge it into desperate straits, and it will come off in safety- For it is precisely when a force has fallen into harm's way that it is capable of striking a blow for victory.

Trust and confidence in your men is arming them with impenetrable shields and unbreakable swords.

If you know the enemy, yourself and army, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself and your force- you will succumb in every battle.

Sun Tzu says it all, better than I ever could.
I memorized this book when I was young, reading it made me feel safe.
