I do not know much about gods; but I think that the river
Is a strong brown god - sullen, untamed and intractable

- TS Eliot, Four Quartets

st louis is one of the coolest cities i have ever been. we were in some pretty nice areas; we went to forest park on friday and caught dinner at pappy's smokehouse, featured on that food network show dives and drive-ins and diners or whatever and easily the best bbq i have ever had. bar none. when we got there they had ran out of EVERYTHING except for pulled pork. the pulled pork was fucking delicious zommgg

we were staying at the hyatt convention center down near the arch with a view of the river, so obviously that was nice. on st. patrick's day a very drunk eleven of us sprinted across the field under the arch, down a set of stairs, hopped a rope, crossed a road, ran down more steps and stuck our hands right in the mississippi where it lapped at the bottom of the stairs.

out of all the monuments in the united states i wasn't expecting to like the gateway arch as much as i did. standing underneath it it looks a little like a mobius strip, twisting around itself in the sunlight and there's no mountains just river and space and sky. i thought it was limestone from a distance the way the sun hit it when i first saw it and i was surprised that it was steel.

the convention itself was awesome. lots of ugly pretentious mouthbreathers, but what do you expect from an international english honor society convention? i watched a girl pick her nose and eat it during a panel. i read four poems in a panel that was just mixed form poems, one kid had a prose poem, another some simple rhyming forms i wasn't familiar with, and two free versers. it's so awesome to be in a new place with a bunch of people just as nerdy as i am.

ahhh, life is good. i feel so much better after getting out of mass for a bit. everyone was so nice in st. louis; i'm getting really tired of new england.

wanderlust, st. louis, travel, life
