It's all very terrifying, but nowhere near as hard as bobbin lace.

Actually, Bobbin lace isn't hard at all. It looks confusing from the outside, but at any given moment, you're not paying attention to all the stuff. Bobbins? They're just handles to hold the thread and keep it from getting dirty or tangled. The pillow? Is just a support mechanism. The threads? You may have hundreds of threads if you're making a very elaborate pattern, but in the moment you're stitching, you're paying attention to a maximum of four threads and what you're almost invariably doing with them is crossing one thread over another and sticking a pin in the pre-printed pattern.

There are a couple more advanced moves that can get a bit tricky, but with some practice even doing sewings and tallies is simple enough.

The trick is to focus on what you need to and ignore the rest. It's really quite zen once you get into the rythym.

I figured it probably wasn't as hard as it seemed, much like watching my mum do lace knittng, but from the outside it does seem daunting.

Exactly. And of course my first reaction on seeing four tiny, fiddly knitting needles is to shrink back and be amazed that anyone can figure out what to do with them. Hee!

Fiber fear. It can be conquored.
