[ In hindsight, leaving Epsilon and Cortana alone was probably not the greatest of ideas, but Wash can't be everywhere all the time. Cortana would certainly have the opportunity to get Epsilon or Church alone, if not now then later, and there's nothing that can be done about it.
Well, except trust her, even though that's a little hard for Wash.
He's looking for Church now anyway, mentally bracing himself for the reaction he already knows is going to be strident and bitching and probably accurate. Of course it's crazy to let Cortana contact her partner. Of course it's crazy to hope for one second that the Master Chief would be interested in their dubious little quest.
(It's crazy, and they don't need any more outsiders, isn't Wash enough to protect them, hasn't he done everything for them up to this point, what if she's lying, what if this ends with them being taken away--)
Except the one who is more likely to be taken away is Wash himself. Epsilon and Church will be able to survive, if Church can teach Epsilon how to jump. They'll be okay.
(They don't really need him at all, do they.)
He re-enters the room Church had been in quietly, rubbing the back of his neck. ]
