AUTUMN EXHIBITIONS:
Images of Devotion: Miniature Tibetan Buddhist Paintings from Mongolia (Sep 9 - Dec 9)
The dominant religion in Mongolia is the Tibetan form of Buddhism. Monasteries, being the traditional centres of formal education, played an important role in spreading not only religion but also Tibetan artistic styles to Mongolia. Miniature Buddhist-themed paintings, commonly called tsagli, are often labelled as “initiation cards” in the West. Although some were used during initiation ceremonies for religious teachings, many were also used as meditation tools and sacred amulets.

Cosmic Design: Tibetan Mandala (Sep 9 - Dec 9)
This exhibition of mandalas will form the backdrop to a special 6-day event taking place at the museum. This autumn the museum will be hosting a visit by a group of monks from the Tashi Lhunpo monastery, one of Tibet’s most important teaching monasteries. From 14th - 19th October, in the Franklin Hsu Gallery at the museum, the monks will construct the sacred design, set down in the Buddhist scriptures, of the palace of a deity, using millions of grains of coloured sand. At the conclusion of the exhibition, during a ceremony of chanting and music, the monks will destroy the mandala in a traditional ritual.
