Year in Review

Jan 05, 2010 23:52

1.What did you do in 2008 that you'd never done before?

Got a paper accepted for publication.  Put a pet to sleep.  Feels like I should have something that's not from December...oh yeah I went to a conference.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more
for next year?
Didn't make any.  I did decide a few months ago to try to make my lj less pointless, and I think I've succeeded.  That being said, I have a gdocs file containing a giant backlog of half written entries...

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

A friend's labmate, and a cousin or two, but no one actually close.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

My very dear Zinc.  Mikey and Anika.  Mrs. Shankle.

5. What countries did you visit?

Only America, but I did hit two new states: Nevada and Minnesota.  Up to 21 now, I think.

6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?

More purpose in my day to day work ethic.

7. What date from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

December 19th.  Driving home from the vet in Long Beach, endlessly apologising to Zinc for not being able to do more.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Finally getting somewhere at managing my anxiety.  Getting the paper accepted for publication.  Volunteering to speak at a conference.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Not closing the web browser and turning off IM more often.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Got bronchitis, and I'm still sorting out my stupid cyst.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

*laughs* another pig, Bucky.  I can't believe how much he's grown.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

Zinc and my mother.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

Glenn Beck seems too easy a choice...

14. Where did most of your money go?

Plane tickets and vet bills.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Sara's wedding!  My baby sister is married!

16. What song will always remind you of 2008?

Dave's Song, I guess.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

i. happier or sadder? About the same.
ii. thinner or fatter? Same.
iii. richer or poorer? Poorer.  Vet bills...

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Smiled

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Being hungover.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

I was in Michigan with the family, though again Adam was gone with Ashley.  Did get to see him a few days before though, and Matt made it home, so I saw the whole family.

22. Did you fall in love in 2008?

Just continued falling.

23. How many one-night stands?

*laughs* there were nights that FELT like a one night stand, but nope, none of them.  Wow, I can't believe I spent the entire year of 2009 with Erik.  Somehow that just hit me right now.

24. What was your favorite TV program?

MASH

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

Not really.

26. What was the best book you read?

"A Room of One's Own" by Virgina Woolf

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Got a new Ani Difranco album that I adore.

28. What did you want and get?

I wanted more confidence at work, and I did find that.  Between learning to manage the anxiety and getting the heck out of lab I'm a lot happier at work now.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?

Haha GForce!  I think I lived in a hole the whole year...

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

Turned 24.  There was cake and presents and dinner and a party.  The party was a little awkward.  I'm throwing one for Fawn next year on my birthday, 'cause I don't like having them for me.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Thanks.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?

Pretty damn lazy.

34. What kept you sane?

My four boys: three pigs and Erik.  IMing Katie, leaving voicemails for Sara, and catching Yin whenever we both have a minute to spare.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

I just watched Return of the Jedi and have decided that Luke in the last battle is the sexiest thing known to humankind.  But that's 2010.  For 2009....uh........that chick from Time Traveller's Wife is hot enough to make me what to rent what looks like a terrible movie.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

The Matthew Shepard Act (success!) and the Stupak Amendment

37. Who did you miss?

Yin, 'cause we hardly talk anymore.  My mom.  I wish I could have lunch with Mom once a week.  My family in general, and of course Sara and Katie.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

Who did I meet this year?  Ingolf...but he can't possible count ;-)  Oh yes FIRST YEARS!  I wonder if I'll ever get over my amazing love of all firsties.  Julia and Amanda and Tivoli and Yu-Jin and all the rest.  Wonder who the new crop will be...*eyes Ross*

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009:

When you get scared, take a deep breath and remind yourself that it's unlikely you're about to die.  Then get on with your life.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:

For December:

I can't believe you're gone
We're gonna miss you so much
You always made me laugh
Now you're making me cry

There's so much you didn't get to do
But I know you don't care anymore
You're in Paradise now
And I know you're smiling down on us

- "Dave's Song" by Pat Kaplan

For the rest of the year:

There aren't too many things
That I know
But I'm sure that this is love that I'm falling in

'Cause baby this morning you could
Outshine the sun
And I've never seen that kind of light
In anyone
I'd fall asleep a hundred times
If it means that I
Could wake up next to you
There's nothing I would rather do
Than wake up next to you

- "Outshine the Sun" by Juliana Finch
This is a song about the everyday occurances
That make you feel like letting go
Yes I think we've got a problem
So much for the afterglow

Don't you wonder why?
We never talk about the future
We never talk about the past anymore
We never ask ourselves the questions
And the answers
That everybody wants to know
So much for the afterglow

Ooooohhhhh
I remember we could talk about anything

- "So Much For the Afterglow"  by Everclear
