Wow, that did not go anywhere remotely near where I thought it was going; how delightful! This story was expertly told, as usual.
I love how you leave just enough out regarding the magic to let the reader go wild with their imagination, but in doing that, you also make clear that this isn't a story about magic; it's a story about family, and growing up, and legacies, and whether or not we have agency over our destiny. Your outlook on these things is refreshing.
I like leaving the "how does it work/what is the magic" a little vague, when I can, and this story worked well for it -- because yes, it's not a story about magic, per se, so much as it is about family and growing up and how we set healthy boundaries and accept what works for us and what doesn't.
You have such a wonderful gift for creating interesting characters and worlds! I always find myself hooked right away when reading your entries and could easily picture all of them being part of much longer stories/books that I would absolutely buy and read. I really love the truly magical vibes all your stories have too <3
I love that her decision effectively allowed her Dad to retire and live something closer to a normal life, and that they were both okay with that. Plus, I'm kinda of the position that keeping the town from changing was very likely holding it back, and even though some ways of life would disappear, that's the way the world works, and smart, capable will be able to grow with their surroundings as the world progresses... only those incapable of adjusting to change will be irreparably damaged, but there are always going to be those in life, and their historic needs shouldn't hold back everyone and everything around them... I feel like both of them made the right decision. Good for him for giving her the freedom to do so, and for being okay with it. <3

And...yes. I think ultimately it came down to Rebecca going, "I don't want to stay, and I think change is healthy." So. :D
I'm glad it worked for you!
