Bagels, Snow
by Julie O'Callaghan

I don't want to
do one of these
'sitting in a bookshop
during January
eating bagels
with my sister
whilst watching
the falling snow
in downtown Chicago
as the lights come on
at dusk' type of deals.
But she is drinking
an oversized cup of cocoa,
there are shelves of reassuring books
beside us, white lights decorate
the winter branches outside
and the tragedy hasn't happened yet
so I need to keep
the snow sparkling,
the cocoa steaming,
the bagels waiting
on a white plate
for as long as possible.

illinoise, winter, poetry
