You can set up comments on Tumblr; you'll need to look into your theme to make it happen, though. You can easily enable comments for question/ask posts, but in order to get more than added comments on reposts you'll need to look into a custom layout - but they're fairly easy to find. And there are some that have them already enabled, but there are more efficient models out there.

As for the gray squares, those show up when I picture is too large or when it's part of a text post. You just need to click on them to make the picture appear.

And I don't use thumbnails on a regular basis, so I'm sorry to say I can add an experienced knowledge to that issue, but I hope you can figure everything out soon, love!

Well, the pictures are only 100x75, but I have been using text posts. I've seen other people post multiple pictures and text all in one post, though. How do I do that?

I may not understand what your issue is.. would you like to post a screen shot? Because those are the only grey boxes I know of.. I'll see them when I post something (other people won't see them) because it's just a feature from you having to see your own content. Or it's because the pictures are too large.

As for the other issue, you just need to make a text post and insert the pictures manually (copy over the url of the picture - through photobucket, flickr, etc. - into the "insert picture" option via tumblr, versus using your own coding) - rather than going through a picture post. The only trouble is that is that, many times, people can't reblog text posts. So if your goal is to find more followers that may be a hinderance depending on how you use the posts.
