New Coat!

Jun 29, 2011 11:40

I finally bought myself a new trench coat. Between holding out for a good deal, it not being decent coat wearing weather, and me just plain forgetting about it, it took me a little while. What re-kindled the fire was that I ordered myself a new patch. The patch is on back order. I ordered it two weeks ago, still no sign of it. I ordered the coat on Friday and it arrived yesterday.

Naturally, I was quick to begin adorning it with some of my many pieces of flair. The patches have been pinned to the places where I think I'm going to put them. The sewing will be a good way to pass time at work.

If anyone's curious, the aforementioned patch is a Capsule Corp. logo. (Those who understand what that is, you get 10 points and a cookie in a capsule*.) I intend to put the Capsule Corp. patch on the left shoulder, but that may prove too difficult a task.

*Cookie will be shipped as soon as someone invents capsules.

I'm planning to add a few more pieces of flair to it in the near-ish future. Specifically, a button with The Numbers on it, probably to go sort of between the TARDIS and Sonic pins. Also, a replacement for my "I would prefer not to" Bartleby button because I saw a better looking one on Etsy**, a button with the Dollhouse logo (you know, with the pods), and a button with the answer to the ultimate question, all to be placed wherever they may fit. Those are the ones I hope to obtain in the near-ish future, but I've also got a ton of crap on my long-term wishlist. I think that a time will come when the buttons will have to become a rotating cast, as opposed to all being regulars.

**How is it that I only discovered Etsy two days ago? I mean, I'd heard of it, but no one mentioned buttons.

The other thing that really caught my interest for the near-ish future is the turtle emblem kanji. (See here: http://one-two-three-four-five.com/dbkanji/dbkame1.jpg) I'm thinking about putting a large one on the back of the coat. (I briefly entertained the idea of the smaller one on the front, but that's also the approximate location of the Dharma logo on the jumpsuits and LOST won that fight.)

While searching for Kame kanji patches, I bumped into a site that talks about all the various kanji in the DB series. One that caught my eye was the Usagi kanji (10 additional points if you know why that would matter to me) that a rabbit-themed villain wore in one episode. I knew that Usagi meant rabbit, but to learn that there was a kanji for it took me down this whole other side road. Yada yada yada, I stayed up later than I intended to the other night googling all sorts of kanji characters and imagining how neat it would be to put some on the coat.

Some of my favorites so far are: ai (love), arashi (storm), tamashii (soul), tsuki (moon), souzou (imagination), kaminari (thunder), sora (sky), usagi (rabbit), uta (song), and yume (dream). (I'm also somewhat entertained by the idea of a kanji that says "kanji".)

I still haven't worked out exacltly how I would put them on the coat. The turtle emblem is all well and good because cosplayers make and sell them, but other kanji become a tricky thing. I don't know if maybe I'd be able to draw them on...but even permanent markers don't usually stand up to repeated washes. I've also thought about trying to stitch them on in black thread, but I imagine that would be incredibly complicated and time consuming.

Skipping past the complications for now, where on the coat would I place the various kanji characters that I'd like to have? I've had a few thoughts. Obviously the Kame kanji would go pretty much in the middle of the back. As I understand it, kanji are read vertically. (Please do correct me if I'm wrong about that.) I've thought about putting nikorasu (Nicholas) and otaku (geek) on either side of that. Either that or putting them on either side of the front, in the area below the lowest patches.

Beyond that, other single character kanji would go around the bottom of the coat. (Single character because I'm pretty sure they stack vertically and it would look odd to have random characters sticking out the top of this circle of characters that I'm picturing. Again, please correct me if I'm wrong. Though if they read horizontally, I might need to separate them clearly so as to avoid a very confusing sentence.) If nikorasu and otaku were to go on the front, then perhaps a few of the multi-character kanji could surround the large Kame kanji on the back (like top, bottom, left, and right).

And, of course, this is all just a daydream at the moment. A week from now I might decide that going kanji crazy wouldn't be a very good idea after all.

Anywho, do you guys have any thoughts on all of this? Know any good kanji characters I might like? Got ideas for how to represent them on the coat? Know any good places to shop for flair***? Any reactions to the coat as it currently is? Did you even read this whole post? (42 points if you did.)

***Especially fandom flair.

Please comment if you have any thoughts at all. Not having a lot to post about can start to make a guy feel isolated.

You know you're watching too much anime when you start googling kanji.****

****Placed outside the cut in an attempt to lure in those who might not have looked.

lost in thought, nightwish squee!, doctor whoville, moon kingdom, buffy stuff, dollhouse, fanboy moment
