Short and ends abruptly but I'm much too tired to work on it anymore =).

"Jane isn't my real name."
Thane paused in threading his fingers through her hair but didn't speak.
"Shepard isn't either."
Thane continued stroking the dark glossy strands and hummed a deep note. "I see."
Jane shifted restlessly, moving off his chest to stare at the stars through the port above her bed. She didn't know why she had brought it up but now that she had, she wondered if she should tell him. About her childhood, about Jane, about how once she was an angry, hurting kid with a gun and someone to use it on.
Thane had moved and was watching her now, a low soothing sound coming from his throat. She looked up and met his eyes. He was curious, she could tell, but he didn't press her, didn't ask for more than she was ready to give.
Thirding the awesomeness of Earthborns who aren't actually Shepard! (My Alex picked her name for herself when she enlisted because Starling was what the Reds had called her)
I now declare this the bamf club ;). I'm much crueler to my Shepard than you are to yours, though. Jane's reasons are much angstier than that, I'm afraid =).
Is it angstier than "the guy who gave me my name is now dead"? Because that's sort of Alex's situation. (I really need to write more about Alex's backstory, but I can't seem to keep a connected narrative... it all falls apart when I try to link bits together.)
Much angstier =). Though for Jane, the death isn't directly connected to her real name. She has several reasons for changing it, actually. Maybe some day soon, I'll write it and post it somewhere.
If you need someone to talk at to help connect all the dots for your Shep's backstory, I'd be willing to help =). I don't think I could ever talk about Mass Effect enough lol.
