No one says a word. They all clutch on to the cards as if letting go will ensure their defeat. Sweat beads fall down the faces of the human players - James, Kaidan, and Joker - as they calmly try to keep their composure. The single Turian at the table has his own subtle facial expression that signals he's getting a bit frustrated.
James is the first to speak.
"C'mon, muchachos, who's gonna be the first big man to take one for the team? Major? You look like you're itching to step up to first plate."
Kaidan shakes his head and surrenders first. "Sorry to admit it, but I don't think I'm cut out for poker."
"Agh, whatever, man. What about you, Flyboy? Got any Aces up your sleeve?"
"Yeah, nuh-uh, you're not making me go first. I'm so not falling for that this time. I think I've gotten humiliated enough to last a lifetime tonight. Couldn't we have played something nice and safe? What about good old 'Go Fish?' Or even 'Crazy Eights? But oh no, we have to play poker to be risky and dangeresque.'" Joker shut up for a second. Then he shrugged. "Guess I'm following the Major on this one. Look at that, I'm actually agreeing with you, old man."
Kaidan purses his lips to keep from retorting.
"Well, boys, I guess I'm going to have to lead this dance." Garrus smoothly lowers his hand to the table, revealing what looks to be a straight flush in the suit of hearts. "Let me show you how we did it on Palaven."
The various players around the table raise their brows in a combination of jealousy and awe. All except one player.
"How cute," a innocent sounding female voice with a thick accent replies.
Tali giggles from across the table and the other players groan. She lays down her hand, a higher straight flush. Garrus' pride instantly dissolves off of his face.
"When are any of you slow-minded bosh'tets going to learn?" Tali jokes, reaching out for the collection of miscellaneous items she has just won from her hand.
Vega sighs and throws down his cards, shooting Garrus a dirty look. Someone should have told him you never invite a Quarian to play poker.
