Birthday

Today was our birthday. The weather was a nice compromise for our birthday. Chris likes the rain, and I like sunny days. We got both! Most of the day was nice and sunny, but there were a few rain storms in the morning and evening.

Our birthday consisted of sleeping in, many phone calls and birthday wishes (thank you to everyone), birthday gifts, and lots of food. Birthday gifts as an adult are always a treat. Without birthday parties, gifts are always few but thoughtful. I also got some work done on my thesis and went to school for a few hours. As part of a tradition, I brought in Tim bits for my lab-mates. When I bought the Tim bits they were fresh from the oven. I had a chocolate one while it was still warm and soft. It was really quite good!

Our adventures in food started last night. We went out to eat 3 times in that past 2 days, and the restaurants got progressively more upscale. I thought it was interesting to see the difference in food and experience quality as our meals got progressively more expensive. (Click on the links for our reviews)

We went out to dinner for Graeme's birthday. It was great to see Graeme again and other familiar faces we hadn't seen in a while. Dinner at McGinnis was a fairly typical dinner. Unfortunately, we didn't realize it was Monday night football so we had to tolerate a loud restaurant with some occasional interruptions, but we did get free Nachos. For lunch today, Chris' parents took us out to Hannah's Bella Bistro in uptown Waterloo, a slightly fancy place. The food was Asian Fusion which is quite flavorful and every meal always tastes interesting.

For dinner we went to a very upscale restaurant called Verses in Kitchener with John and Sarah. This is probably one of the most expensive places in town. The restaurant is inside an old renovated church. The atmosphere is really quite interesting. It was really cool when it started to thunderstorm out! What a neat feeling being in a quiet open church with the rain pounding on the windows, the lightning lighting up the stained glass windows, and the thunder roaring through the room. Dinner was excellent. Everything we had was delicious and full of flavor. The food was a little exotic, we had a total of 7 different animals on our table throughout the night (none of them Chicken oddly enough) and far more varieties of vegetables. The whole outing was an event. Dinner lasted 3 hours and we had lots of time for socializing. At the end of our meal we got to blow out two candles after John and Sarah very thoughtfully sang for us.

What a happy birthday. :)
