Just walked in the door from NYCC about an hour ago. Wasn't able to come up last year, but this year, Steven and Caroline were able to make the trek up from Virginia. We spent the nights at my dad's house in Baldwin (Long Island). He's literally a ten minute walk from the Long Island Rail Road, so we took trains into the con every day. Also got to hang out with
gregx and his brother, which is always fun.
This year, though, I swear there were twice as many people as when I came in 2010. Yesterday, it was so bad it would sometimes take you twenty minutes to get from one place to another when on another day it might take you five. I didn't even go up to the show floor yesterday, because it was such a fucking sea of bodies. They definitely sold more tickets this year than the Javits Center can comfortably handle. Of course, I also think some people were sneaking in without passes because security is laughable there. Also, it was impossible to talk or text on your phone due to all the cell phone traffic, a problem I definitely do not remember from 2010.
Still, it was a lot of fun. Some highlights included walking around for a few hours in the Rorschach costume (which I haven't had a chance to wear since Halloween 2009. The suit jacket and slacks still fit me, amazingly); getting Phil Lamarr's autograph, and picture, and the chance to tell him that Power Friend was one of my favorite MadTV sketches, which he thought was great; the Nostalgia Chick's party on Friday night. Sadly, I had to duck out early to catch a train, but I stayed long enough to participate in the acapella rendition of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air theme, which made it all worth it; and Ian McDarmid's panel earlier today. Ian was a really great guy, and thankfully the audience had just the right mix of people who were Star Wars fans, and people who were familiar with his theater work, too, so it was a good mix of questions; and after the con was done, me, Greg, Alex, Nick, and a few other people went to Little Italy for pizza at Lombardi's, and also to Ferrara's for dessert afterwards.
Also spent more money on stuff than I intended to, but thankfully not as much as I could have. I walked away with:
-Batman: Knightfall Volume 3
-Deadpool Volume 6: I Rule, You Suck
-Fables, Volume 8
-Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Promise, Parts One and Two
-Some Han Solo carbonite ice cube trays
-The tenth doctor's sonic screwdriver
My calves hurt like madness right now. I definitely have done more walking in the last four days then I normally do in the course of a month, so I know I'll be feeling it the next few days. Getting older sucks. Of course, I've been meaning to start walking more again anyway.
But the pain was worth it. I think I took more pictures at this con than I did in 2010. That's really one of the things I love doing: getting pictures of good cosplay. I'll be hanging around my dad's house in Long Island until Wednesday afternoon, but when I get back to Florida, I should be able to put some up. For now, I'm going to drink this beer sitting next to me and then fall into bed.
But overall, if this is indeed the last con I'll ever go to, I can face the end of the world in two months with no regrets. ( ;
