Liberal Farts

I had a good talk with my parents last night. My family has been going through kind of a yuck patch lately, so I've felt a little alienated, unwanted even. But they were all just so obviously happy to have me home that I can't help but feel like things are changing for the better ( Read more... )

First and foremost, I am happy that your parents happy to have you home. Also, Travis' parents weren't even there to give him his seven course dinner. He had chicken patties, which is funny ( ... )

Aw, poor, hungry Travis. I hope they were at least good chicken patties.

But yeah, art. I am starting to realize that the only art I value is art that I actually enjoy. It it is interesting or fun or cool or (god forbid) pretty, then I appreciate it. So when people start to talk about being really emotionally moved by a painting or whatever, I tend to get kinda suspicious, because that has never happened to me. Stories can move me, and art can be used to make stories, but the content has to be there first. So yeah, my goal now is making fun things for people to enjoy and being kind of an interesting, informed person at the same time.

It is really nice to know that someone else has been through the "Dang, are art degrees just shit stupid?" crisis. Thanks for telling me about it.

I am really glad you enjoyed your moustache.

Whoops, I think I replied to this comment like four times, because livejournal was being a dick. But it's okay now! I am calm.

for what its worth, I think sociology is incredibly interesting and is really helpful for dealing with social issues. Old school sociology(avoid durkheim like its your job) I have found to be incredibly dry and outright annoying, but sociology dealing with social movements, gender, the family, institutions, etc.. are all really interesting and can have incredible ramifications. I think you should try taking an intro soc. class and see if you like it. Try taking a poli sci class and see if you like it. There's a lot of potential here to realize a passion you might have never known could exist. I think you have ever reason to be scared, but you also have every reason to be excited. This was a little too girl powerish for me, I apologize.

I definitely think sociology is the subject that would be the clearest fit for me, since then I could babble about my opinions on class and gender and such with some actual data to back me up. But yeah, I'm thinking I want to try something I'm not initially interested, to gain an understanding on the world from a completely new perspective, or something.

Maybe I am just heasitant because John dropped his computer science degree in favor of sociology. And dammit, we can't both be double majors in English and sociology. That would just be gross.

ok uhm, how to put this nicely...does John know that those are totally girl majors? I say this with scientific evidence, because I'm in Sociology of Gender, and we looked at male and female majors...sociology and english are like 75% women. At least with computer science he was in touch with his masculine and feminine side. uh-oh.

John transcends gender. Except for the chest hair.

I think you should just drop school, smoke dope, and walk around protesting random things.

Alternatively, if you want to get into politics, or something of that nature, try law. That may actually suite you.

Correct me if I am wrong, but you aren't very good at math? so you would probably want to dodge economics. And again, law just seems like a better fit for you.

It's a lot easier to get access to dope and fellow protestors if I stay in school.

And I don't actually want to go into politics professionally. I'm thinking more along the lines of teaching or social work or something. Actually I don't know what I'm thinking. And I have some lawyers in my family (including my dad), so that thought scares the shit out of me.

I've always actually been a really solid math student. I've always just kind of abandoned math in favor of subjects I have a greater natural inclination for. Which is partly why economics interested me, because it's a seemingly important subject that I have no real handle on, so it would very immediately broaden the scope of my knowledge. Or something. I dunno.

That dope is sounding pretty good right about now.

Don't worry brenna, let's just win the lottery and then who cares about picking a major.

Brenner,
This may be totally off-target, but what about EEB (ecology and evolutionary biology)? I know you've done some environmental stuff, so maybe that's the perfect degree for you - combining social/political activism with hard data and knowledge. You could minor in it if the major is too big. But it would let you do some pretty cool research, etc. Just a thought? I can't help it, I'm a bio major. Somebody shoot me :o)
