Humanformer fics, part deux

2. Fleshling, by iratepirate and Taipan Kiryu

Method of humanization : Well of Transformation

Main character : Starscream (no one else humanized)

Summary : It’s tough to go from the Air Commander of the Decepticon Army to a despised “fleshling”, especially when you’re the only one of that kind in that base. The other Seekers see him as a pet or “bad luck charm” (thanks, Skywarp), the Insecticons see him as a meal and Megatron doesn’t want to see him at all. But he soon realizes Starscream can be of use to them working against the Autobots, and has him dumped in Portland to do so.

Starscream has the usual difficulties in dealing with his sudden case of humanity and the fic has some amusing parts, though he’s far too familiar with human norms and customs from the get-go. He also has a relatively easy time of it - he’s extremely strong for a human, gets befriended by a prostitute with a heart of gold (who gives him free sex) and has the Decrpticons’ help in their plot, though this is understandable. It’s not a consistently effective fic or a complete one, but I’m still curious about what he’ll do against the Autobots and how he’ll get his body back.

3. Die Mauer, by peacewish

Method of humanization : (spoiler ahead) A hallucination caused by the Robo-Smasher; characters not actually humanized

Main character : Bumblebee, though not named until the end. All other Autobots and Decepticons also humanized.

Summary : When I first started reading this fic, the first chapter was slow going. The protagonist has amnesia and never acquires a name. Nor do any of the other (human) characters. All I knew was that someone seemed to be lost in East Berlin, and I wondered when the Transformers would show up.

But Soundwave did just that in chapter 2.

"Mental strain, unpleasant and unproductive. Identity, unimportant."

"But I -"

"Suggestion, cease interruptions."

I picked up on the warning, and shut my mouth. The cat had begun to purr, under the languid stroking of its master, and stared at me haughtily.

After that it was fun figuring out who was who - without benefit of names or distinctively colored clothes - and what was going on. I also love the denouement at the end. Much as I think the Robo-Smasher stinks as a plot device, this story makes it work. But I agree it would have been great to have one of the guards on the wall sigh that it doesn’t matter what side you’re on, you die in the end.

Happy now? :)
