Last year was my best hair year of my life, because I was in Taiwan, where they do straight perms (also known as thermal reconditioning and japanese straightening) really good and cheap.
I had gotten sick of my unmanageable curls long before. That's why I chopped them all off. But the curls came back with a vengeance. After graduating, I returned to Taiwan with a huge 'fro, or a "microphone head," as Helen likes to say. I lost no time in making a trip to a salon, where they convinced my to let them straighten the poofy mass instead of shearing it. I liked the results so much, I got 4 or 5 straight perms over the course of the year, never paying more than $75.
Back in the States I realized that if I wanted my hair thermally reconditioned, I'd have to multiply that number by 10. So in the nine months since my last straightening, my hair has grown several curly inches at the roots and the ends have gotten all frazzled. Something had to be done.
I went to the salon, and the hairdresser who cut my hair told me that straightening it myself after every shampoo would do the trick. I went directly to the bought a straightener at Bartell's and spent about 15 minutes in front of the mirror clamping and pulling on my hair and wah-lah! My hair looked good again! Never one to spend time on my appearance, believe me I am willing to invest 15 minutes a day for straight hair.
I'm sure glad it works, because otherwise I'd have to cut it short again. I'd rather have (next to) no hair than curly hair.
Once you get a perm you never return.
