I need to sleep. No, I need to sleep right now. I should be sleeping right now.
But this is what happens when I work nights, and then have places to be in the morning. Comes with the territory.
Today, I had a doctor's appointment at 8:45 a.m. after working last night, so I slept about five hours. I showed up 10 minutes late, but it worked out OK. He's in the center of town, so only 1 1/2 miles away from my apartment. Can't beat that. Most of my life, going to the doctor or the dentist always felt like it was a 45-minute journey to some windowless downtown office. Now I can walk there, which probably would be a good idea to be at my healthiest walking in the door.
He was very nice, personable and middle-aged, New York-area accent, Giants football fan. As usual, my employment in sports media makes me a king of small talk, but the doctor always asked good questions. Talked health, sports and marriage.
That's another thing: marriage. Since the whole engagement thing started last Christmas, I'm now part of this new society, this new club of married people. Even though I'm only engaged, the married are opening their arms and taking me in. The long-suffering, the happy, the resigned-to-her-will, all of these married men in their variety. They look at me and say, "one of us ..."
I don't know if I'll fit in with them beyond smiling and nodding at their jokes. (More on that later.) But, if anything, we all learned how to keep a woman. Which I guess means we won.
I had another late night-early morning on Sunday, in the name of matrimonial romance. Rosemary and I met with our pal Jillian to do engagement photos. We had such a blast doing a shoot with her last November, we knew we wanted another. The start of the yearlong countdown to the wedding sounded like the perfect time to do engagement shots.
So we met at 9 a.m. last Sunday on a brisk morning in Collinsville, creeping around old factories and taking in the sunshine and dogs out on walks. Someone asked us if we were doing engagement photos. Whatever gave this away, a couple in nice clothes running down the street from a church at a photographer?
We'll be getting the photos soon, but Jillian did give us this
sneak peek. Love it, right?
OK, time for a nap.
