Rosemary has been sick all last week, so I kept the house together with doctor's visits, dinners, laundry and house cleaning.* By the time my three-day weekend came around, she was feeling better and it was time to go have some fun.
Saturday night we went to see
Bon Appetit Burlesque in Northampton, MA. The show is hosted by seriously awesome drag queen Hors D'Oeuvres, who kept the show lively with chatty fierceness and party games. The show was superheroes and supervillains-themed, and Hors was poured into a black bodysuit and sparkly gold high-heel boots like Ms. Marvel.
Hadn't been out to burlesque in quite a while, and it was nice to see some new faces. A couple of girls from Rhode Island, Miss Bettysioux Taylor and Serendipity Galore, did some awesome routines: one of Dr. Evil and her cat ripping her clothes off to bat at catnip pasties, and another one where she "shaved" off fur from the cat costume and by ripping off Velcro'd fur pieces.
Ruby Solitaire turned from Ghostbuster to sexy Slimer. And new local favorite Lily La Vamp cut away her costume with a knife in one bit, and did an
"X-Files" routine as well**. There also was a boy burlesquer, Captain Elastico, who did a fan dance with a superhero cape to hide his sparkly red thong.
And how thrilled I was to see a Zatanna routine, with the dancer
seducing a rabbit out of her hat. There HAD to be a Zatanna routine at a superhero burlesque show, when her costume looks like
this.***
The games made the night even better. Hors became the sideshow, was very funny and made waiting from dance to dance totally worthwhile and fun. Continuing the super-theme, he had supervillain games such as hostage-taking and minion auditions. And then he brought me on stage alongside the world's cutest dyke**** and a Tom Green-looking dude for this game: delivering a supervillain monologue and evil laugh. Little did Hors know that I've been practicing this since I was 5. I unleashed the supervillain within and won the contest. People were chanting my name, it was ridiculous! Here's a
photo of me playing, courtesy Leslie Arak.
I won a T-shirt designed by local artist Amy Gardiner, whose comic-style art was on display. We were at the table next to her, so we met after the show.
What a good time! Definitely will try to go back, and may have to catch Hors at some of his other gigs.
*I guess I have that "in sickness and in health" part of the impending marriage vows down.
**It's insane how much I don't miss “The X-Files,” and I watched the shit out of that show. Even the Robert Patrick years.
***What's better than that?
Zatanna as cosplay.
****It's said to have the largest amount of lesbians per capita iamong U.S. cities. The crowd was pretty much Rosemary, I, and college-age lesbians. The conversations were interesting to listen in on, bringing back memories of college past. Especially the dateless parts.
