1. No Oscars for me tonight. Just don't care, plus if I have to see them hand Sandra Bullock an award for Julia Roberts-ing her way through "The Blind Side" aka "White Privilege Saves A Magical Negro" (not Michael Oher and the Touhy's actual story, which is amazing, but the way the movie depicted it), I never will have had such fury over an award that doesn't really matter. Gabouray Sidibe looked awesome on the red carpet.
2. Roller derby demands toughness. Watched the CT RollerGirls Friday night after being up since 5 a.m., and watched them get pummeled by a crew from Montreal. Never underestimate the fury of French-Canadiens. CTRG needs to get tough, fast! The Philly sports fan in me fought so hard not to boo.
3. No more politics. I don't want to hear another thing about socialism, spending, deficits and must-wins. Somehow everything's going to hell now that Obama's in office, right? I knew this ugliness would arise. And now we've got Republicans willing to withhold unemployment benefits just to make a point.
4. The Winter Olympics were pretty darn kick-ass, weren't they? Thanks to HD television, Winter X Games and old-fashioned patriotism, I finally paid attention to these things beyond figure skating. Everyone finally noticed how fucking extreme Nordic and Alpine sports are. "Hey, I'm gonna sprint on skis! Slide down an ice chute on my face! Jump off a ramp! Run around in a tiny circle with razor-sharp metal strapped to my feet!" Nearly every sport has these outcomes: success or DEATH. And that gold medal hockey game? It was so good that I'm going to my first hockey game since 1998 later this month.
The figure skating was lovely from Kim Yu-Na, Mao Asada and Mirai Nagasu. Kim is a beautiful queen of the ice, almost mythical in her presence and skates so womanly, great sensuality. But I tell you what - Asada's performance in the shadow of Kim was just dark and brilliant, and her choice of Rachmaninoff's "Prelude No. 3 Opus 2" totally fit the moment. Asada and Kim grew up together, and Kim's brilliance separated them despite Asada's own world-class talents. And her free skate summed it all up -
the ambition, the resignation, the regret, the guts. Even the mistakes happened as if on cue.
5. Work work work. Been working a lot, getting up very early. Gotta go to bed now, since I have to be up at 4 a.m. At least I'm going to Philly for a couple of days.
6. French-Canadiens are tough about beer, too. I had my first taste of La Fin Du Monde yesterday. With a 9% alcohol volume, no wonder this triple-fermented brew is named "the end of the world." One bottle and I was gooooooood. And now I get back to Philly, and bring back a case of Yuengling. Yes.
