So
the Republican National Committee elected Michael Steele as president.
In case you didn't know, Steele is black. A week after Obama is elected, the Republicans have a black guy at top dog. Put this together with young movers and shakers such as Bobby Jindal, who is Indian American, and there are some interesting developments in the GOP.
Does this mean we won't hear the end of the liberal, socialist crying? Nope. But I'm intrigued and want to see what the party does. Steele hinted at what sounded like a 50-state strategy, which has worked for the Democrats. I am interested to see how this obvious attempt to push the party into the future will bump against the bigotry-light, anti-immigrant, anti-gay, better-red-than-dead elements of the conservative nation. Republicans aren't exclusive to this behavior, mind you - Hillary's primary campaign, anyone? - but they definitely have a bigger image problem to clean up in that regard.
Meanwhile, Obama's first bill signed
is for equal pay that allows women more time to sue employers who do not pay men and women equally for the same job. Wowsers.
And also meanwhile: The economic stimulus plan fighting continues. Most likely, as it should, though probably not for the reasons I've been reading about. Somehow I doubt most of the 435 members of the House know much about how to create jobs, but if you think education, Medicaid and family planning have nothing to do with the economy, I'm afraid for you.
