Ah, what a day.
My bag is nearly packed, save for toiletries and little what-nots. Laptop is charged, pulled out some DVDs for the trip.
Today I had to go run my errands. First, get a haircut. Gotta look pretty for the pictures, right? So I go to my usual guy a town over, and he's closed for Monday! Now, I know no other barbershops around here - at least not any that I am sure can cut black hair.
So I drive to (hard-hittin') New Britain, where I'm sure there are enough brown people that I'd find someone who can cut my hair. Do I know a barbershop in New Britain? No. But I figure I'll go downtown, walk into a bodega and ask around. But luckily I drove around a bit and found one by accident. I walk in to a wide open space with reggaeton and Spanish-language rap blaring, and though my barber and I had a pretty wide language barrier, he hooked me up TIGHT. After doing the basic clipper work, he pulls out a straight razor and lines me up, then shaves my beard down to a Sharpie-thin line along the jaw. So now I am totally cut up for Miami.
I am really looking forward to meeting people across media, to discuss the use of media and Web technology to create community. From a personal standpoint I think it's the next frontier of media and journalism, and from a professional view it's something all media outlets - ESPN among them - is trying to do more of. I'm gonna try to meet as many people as possible, learn what I can and share what I know too. I think I packed about 300 business cards.
It'll also be fun.
Chops is packed, and I'll get to see my good friend Susan, I'll get to visit "The U" (that's the University of Miami to lesser mortals), and some time away from Bristol is always welcome. I'll have a laptop with me, so I'll be in touch, folks.
