I was watching some of the ALMA Awards last night, which honor Latinos in TV and film and is hosted by the National Council of La Raza.
Prince is playing the show in the medley-centered, bursting-off-the-stage manner that he's playing right now. (Did you see him at the Super Bowl?) And because this is a Latino atmosphere, he's playing more Latin-flavored funk, and a gorgeous Sheila E. is playing with him, furiously banging away at her drums. They even get into "The Glamorous Life," which really gets the crowd yelling.
But one of the songs Prince sings has this main lyric:
GET ON THE BOAT, PEOPLE
Now, the song is actually a call for a Noah's Ark-type path to higher understanding as Prince
calls people of every color and creed.
But the coincidence of singing to a room full of Latinos to GET ON THE BOAT is ... wow.
If he had started exhorting the audience to JUMP THE FENCE, PEOPLE, and then sang about hanging outside the Home Depot to get on the back of a pickup truck, then we're really be in trouble!
