The History of Nephe

In the years since the arrival of man-kind in Nephe and the surrounding countries of Ypisiona, Riteno, Faelel, and Xybe, mankind has always been at war with each other. Even after the formation of the continent of Elysium wars had gone on. The formation of the Mæsters had solidified that fact. From the first Mæster to the current reigning one in the year of 361, Nephe was almost constantly at war, either with herself or with her surrounding neighbors.

The founding of Nephe began with Mæster McKnight. He founded Nephe after it broke off of the old Kingdom of Sumilaia 361 years ago. It was a tiny country that was dwarfed by Sumilaia and her surrounding countries. Over time the Sumilaia Empire fell and the countries of Riteno and Ypisiona were founded along with several other dead countries. After Mæster McKnight's death at the shocking age of eighty-nine Nephe had grown to a quarter of the size it currently resides at in Mæster Chamberlayn's rule.

Soon war encompassed Nephe as the next three Mæsters tried to extend her borders. Only Mæster Donovan was successful in extending the borders to a little more than three-quarters of what it currently resides at. Her nickname was Vivian “the blood-red queen” Donovan. She struck fear in her neighboring countries and her own country. People feared that she would execute them for even mentioning anything bad about her. They said that she had ears and eyes everywhere. She lived to the ripe old age of fifty, the average age of the Nephians back then.

After Mæster Donovan's term came several decades of peace starting with Mæster Freeman. He made sure that peace is what the Nephians experienced during his rule. When it was time for him to depart from this world, he appointed a Mæster that would follow in his footsteps and continue on with the peace. Mæster McGowen continued the peace to the best of her ability but her successor wasn't successful in continuing that peace.

Mæster McPherson wasn't a good of a ruler as the past Mæsters were and his decisions were based on what the council wanted him to do. And what the council wanted was war. So, unwillingly, the last ten years of his rule was with war with Xybe. It wasn't too bloody of a war but it reminded the other neighboring countries that even though there is peace it never lasts for too long. Sooner or later that peace will shatter and the results of that shattering is war-whether internal or external.

The war lasted well past Mæster McPherson’s rule and into Mæster Vaughan's. She actually wanted the war to continue on but onto the other neighboring countries but the council decided to stop the war before she had the chance to even declare world-wide war on the other countries. She spent the last years of her rule in confinement, being deemed insane by the council and most of her family. The realm of Nephe was in complete disarray for the past ten years of Mæster Vaughan's rule. The Nephians didn't know who was ruling over the country-an insane Mæster or her council. The Mæster would make public appearances, though at the time it was because the council was making her do that to show that she wasn't what the rumors were. Over time it was clear that she was insane and the citizens shunned her council's decisions.

When Mæster Tadakuni came into his reign he changed many of the laws that the past Mæsters had upheld religiously. He decreed that the laws weren't religious doctrines and didn't have to be followed exactly word for word. They could, and would, be used as guidelines if the crime didn't exactly follow the exact outline of the punishment that was to be dealt out to the person who commited the crime. That was just one of the many laws that he changed. Another was that a mercenary group didn't have to be loyal to one country. They could do deals with more than one country and reside in more than one at the same time. Other countries, like Faelel and Riteno, had already put that law into effect decades ago but Nephe was a little slow to follow their example.

Under his reign, he came to put a particular mercenary group under his control-the largest one in all of Elysium. Back then, the group was ruled by a woman, something unheard of in the mercenary world. She ruled her clan with an iron fist alongside her husband, her second in command. She spawned only three sons during her rule over her clan, her eldest son taking over the clan the last ten years of Mæster Tadakuni's rule. Mæster Tadakuni used the clan to his advantage, sending them to assassinate certain royalty or high-council members of the neighboring countries. They had no idea about what they were doing. They were just doing a job that the Mæster had ordered them to do and was being paid royally for doing it.

There were bloody times in Nephe with the past Mæsters and the Nephians had thought that the bloodshed might end when Mæster Mimi Devareaux took the throne when Mæster Mizuno Tadakuni had died. But that bloodshed ended up extending past his reign though not until she was firmly on the throne for most of her time as Mæster. Four years before she died, she ordered the execution of the biggest mercenary clan in Nephe and Faelel. The downfall of that clan would forever be burned into the pages of history.

After that incident, Faelel went to war with Nephe. It took over four years for the war to come to a close. The two countries made a truce after Mæster Devareaux died and Mæster Chamberlayn was appointed the new Mæster. There has been peace since then but it is only a matter of time before the next incident takes place.
