News (and such)

Am chugging right along on NaNoWriMo. I finished two stories in the past couple of days, and got a huge chunk of the surprise-Broadford story finished. Go figure, it also wound up being a surprise-Conqueror-Worm story (a Lily Spencer story, to be exact, so 6 of one and 1/2 a dozen of the other). I think the story it was supposed to be might wind up being something else.

I've also got my regular computer back (hey hey!) fresh with Windows 7 on it, courtesy of my Dad. So far, so good. I've used Word a couple of times today, and haven't had any problems yet. We'll keep our fingers crossed, though. Don't want a relapse.

7 is pretty nice, on the whole. It's a lot cleaner than Vista, without all the add-on crap that clogged up the system and made startup so slow. It no longer takes 15 minutes for my computer to come on. I also like the little taskbar at the bottom (something they borrowed from Macs, I've been told) because it's nice not to have to go through all that rigamarolle to get to the program I use most frequently (even if that rigamarolle is just fastening it to the desktop and double clicking...).

Did a major backup of all my stuff on the external hard drive, anyway. I don't want to have a panic attack if Lenore goes down like the Titanic again.

Giving Liquid Story Binder a try. I've heard it's really good (the only Windows equivalent to Scrivener), and I figured I'd look around and see what I thought. It's really planning heavy, which I kind of need, but there isn't a lot of flexibility with a lot of the files. Also, I don't like how with some files, you can't go back and change things after you've put in the information.

Still, it's given me an excuse to do some planning for LET THE TABBY DROWSE, which I need. I've got a list of things I need to do research on, as well, but I have to wait until I'm not so overdrawn on all my books at the library for academia. :)

The list, in case you're interested (and even if you're not) is as follows:

1. The Underground Railroad (particularly in the mid-Atlantic region, southern Pennsylvania, Delaware, etc.)
2. Quakers, particularly at the turn of the century
3. Mid-Atlantic folklore (particularly what kind of folk magic a girl could get into at the turn of the century; so I'm looking at immigrant demographics from that era in the DelMarVa/Pennsylvania area).
4. Turn of the century architecture.
5. Servants in American, turn of the century, middle-class households.

If you know any goods books in any of these areas, let me know. (Although not the Okonowicz books for no. 3, because I've already got them on my list).

I feel like I should be working, but I'm not. At least I got dressed (finally). Even ate something.
