It's coming. Again. Sometimes I'm so stunned at how quickly it comes back around every year. This is the first year in a while that I'm not shooting for anything crazy. No major Conqueror Worm installment. No 250k sprint or w/e. I've overwhelmed with work already, and I've got grad school applications to finish, so I'm not testing myself this year ( Read more... )

I read a short story called "Children on Their Birthdays" by Truman Capote thin my Creative Writing class. That one was really good.

We also read "The Aleph" by Jorge Luis Borge. I enjoyed that one as well.

Sounds good. I'll try to hunt them down. Are you working out of an anthology at all, or something else?

Also, have you read any Joyce Carol Oates? I'm finding her short work simultaneously enjoyable/infuriating.

We're reading them from "The Art of the Tale," an anthology put together by Daniel Halpern. We've read a good number of stuff from it and so far I've enjoyed most of them. Some weren't really my style. Others I just didn't really get the point, mostly because the point was so hidden and vague that it didn't occur to me until my professor pointed it out. And then I felt kinda stupid.

The anthology has a HUGE variety of authors from all over the planet though. I'd check it out if you're looking to check out various short story styles and what not.

I have not read any Joyce Carol Oates. I have one of her books from that Rushdie thing we did way back in the stone age w/ Thom. But I never read it.

Of course I will! I will *make* time if I have to, because I am so sick of having to give up my social life to sit in front of a computer/book/latin study guides for an exam I'm going to fail anyway.
