Things got done. Sorting the mail, enough to find the tax forms. Putting
CDs on shelves. A sleep study (rescheduled from the 23rd). Making a
budget spreadsheet. Finding out where the money has gone. Getting
stomped by the elephant in the living room. Slacking. A lot of
good reading research (c.f. [Lehrer53]). That kind
of thing.
See userpic.
For some reason I don't seem to be nearly as panicked as my financial
situation warrants - I have been retired for nearly 8 months, and I've
been in deep denial over just how much money I've burned through during
that time.
N starts a new job on Monday. That will help, but not enough. I could
easily cover the shortfall by getting a job -- there are remote options
out there and a lot of them look attractive. The problem is that they're
all full-time, and given what else needs doing in the household I
really don't want to work full time. (And that's assuming I
could get one, which at my age isn't a given anymore.)
Not a happy bear at this point. And I'm going to owe a lot on my taxes,
too, because I didn't set up enough withholding on my retirement income.
Because denial and depression.

The House That Spied on Me [LWN] smart home saga
" Thanks to the Internet of Things, I could live in my very own tech-mediated Downton
Abbey. That’s the appeal of smart homes for most people, and why they are supposed
to be a $27 billion market by 2021. But that wasn’t my primary motivation. The
reason I smartened up my house was to find out whether it would betray me. "
" . Ultimately, I’m not going to warn you against making everything in your home smart
because of the privacy risks, although there are quite a few. I’m going to warn you
against a smart home because living in it is annoying as hell. "

The developer’s dilemma - Nadia Eghbal - Medium [LWN]
" When it comes to making money, software developers are an odd bunch. Developers
produce code, and code is in high demand. At a glance, it seems obvious that this
work pays for itself.
But when a developer produces code of their own choosing, they quickly find that
while their code-writing skills have market value, their output (the code they
write) has none. "
