Anime editing... O.O
Wow...I'm actually glad that I watched the Filipino version of Digimon Adventure (the very first season) when I was looking around and couldn't find any Raw eps or subbed eps past episode 10.
See, the Filipino version uses the original Japanese animation...just dubbed with their own VAs...whose accents and such I got used to after a few episodes. So, why was I watching a Filipino version?
Cause the people who brought over Digimon not only butchered the episodes (that includes the editing and changes to all the names and attacks), but they didn't even release any VHS or DVDs...not that I'd buy them unless they had a Japanese with English sub option (or just plain Japanese...).
So, in a dub vs dub, the Filipino version is better. If you can learn to understand some of the accents (Sora has a heavy accent at times, Koushirou sounds a little too grown up for a 10 year old, and some of the digimon are near impossible to understand because the VAs altered their voices...that plus the accent makes it hard to get what they're saying), then the Filipino version is worth watching more than the English version.
First, they got all the names right. Takeru was Takeru, not TK. Yamatto was Yamatto, not Matt. Taichi was Taichi and not Tai, Hikari was Hikari and not Kari (though, they pronounced her name wrong), Koushirou was Koushirou and not Izzy...
And they didn't change any of the digimon names or attacks. Well, they did alter one or two of the lesser digimon, but not major changes to the names.
There were a few things that the English version edited out...like some of the deaths of the digimon, Apocolomon scratching himself and drawing blood, Hikari's reaction to Wizarmon's death (though, we saw the complete unedited reaction in a Zero Two flashback), PetitDevimon's attacks, and some minor things.
But the biggest was episode 43. When I saw that, I was like...
O.O!!!
That's the episode where Pinnochimon (I know I spelled that wrong) takes Takeru (TK) to his warped house to play with him. The Enlgish version did an admirable job of editing out all the guns, I must say.
Yes, the episode had guns in it...a lot of them. They weren't playing "Hide and Seek" in the real version. They were playing "War Game" with real guns. Pinnocimon gave Takeru an automatic gun to use (which he couldn't because it was too heavy), and used a revolver magnum as his own weapon. They even showed him loading bullets into it. And, yes, he shot at Takeru.
In the English version, when he caught up to Takeru, he "paused because he was made of poison ivy and had to scratch it". What really happened was that he was about to shoot Takeru, but ran out of bullets and had to reload the gun. Takeru still tricked him with the entire friends thing, saving his own life, but...
Wow. I did not expect that to be in an episode. I mean, I know some of the digimon use and have guns as their weapons, but...I wasn't expecting them giving Takeru a gun to use (though, again, he couldn't use it cause it was too heavy for him), nor for the digimon to be shooting a lethal weapon at the 8 year old.
I can't blame the English dubbers for editing it, especially considering the time when the very first season of Digimon aired.
Back then, even for anime, they wouldn't even say the word 'hell'. Now, they have the characters saying 'damn'. Not in the children's anime, but I've caught that word a couple times in other anime. Mostly on adult swim or Toonami, but still...we're talking about back when anime first started to really air. Back when Pokemon first came to the US.
Still, that episode rendered me speechless for a while. I wasn't expecting to see that. It wasn't even on the list of edited episodes when I looked at the list someone made of cuts that were made in the English version. I guess there were too many cuts/edits to that episode for them to mention it.
