It had only been a few days but Purple Haze had grown accustomed to holding on to Power Girl's back as the older woman flew among the tops of buildings during patrol. Still, she wouldn't have minded a jet or something. Besides, her straddling Peej totally spoiled the effect of her red cape and Haze's own purple cape didn't quite 'work' with Peej's outfit.
Oh god, thought Haze, it's been about a week and already I'm thinking about fluffy bullshit like if this shirt goes with these shoes. She would have smacked her forehead but she needed to keep hold of her ride
( ... )
Shoving two large city dumpsters out of their place, a man in a heavy black trench coat and leather cowl covering two-thirds of his face blocked the end of an alley as a mint SUV with heavy tinted windows speed down the one-way passage.
Launching himself feet first over the dumpster barrier, Midnighter shattered the windshield with ease, pinning and momentarily stunning the driver in place just as the car drove into the temporary blockade. With both hands, Midnighter pulled the driver out, making sure to catch the sides of his face over the smashed glass.
The girl's weight was negligible but carrying her around was awkward. The woman was considering having something made for her by the technicians at Starrware. Of course, they might look weird having someone on a flying scooter chasing after her but the alternatives weren't very promising. For a brief moment, the ridiculous image appeared in her mind of Haze surfing along behind her on the metal boomerang that bear in Tailspin used to ride on. No. No that will not be happening. Powergirl sighed inwardly just before she felt a tug and heard Haze saying she'd seen something.
A quick scan and she could see exactly what Haze was talking about so she changed trajectory, gliding down and landing a few feet away from the extremely violent altercation. "Uhm...so what's going on here?" She asked as she let Purple Haze down off her back.
As Midnighter pushed the driver of the SUV down to become better acquainted with the asphalt, he twisted back one of his arms, ready to break bone and tendon alike.
"Power Girl." Midnighter gave the young woman as much of a smile as he could mange. Though they had never met, she was one of the notable good guys. Famous too. Superman's little sister, or cousin, or something.
"And Girl Backpack." He added dryly, shifting his focus briefly to the young girl he didn't know. "Didn't mean to spoil your field trip."
The landing seemed to Purple Haze like the longest trek from point A to point B in the history of the universe. She was squirming as Peej descended. Was she spoiling for a fight or was it something more?
When they landed and she looked up at Midnighter, she understood. Maybe it was the way the shadows were, or the way he held the man against the ground, the twist of the arm, the mask...
She stared at Midnighter, then blinked up at him with huge, little girl eyes. Then she launched herself at him, a purple and black streak but instead of stabbing him, or punching him, or kicking him, or severing a carotid artery, she tried to throw her arms around his middle and hug him.
"Whoa there, Human Compass." Midnighter said, getting a read on her when she charged him. And in contrast to the violent hold he had on the man at his feet, he was not unkind to children and allowed the hug. Briefly tapping a hand to her shoulder to get the girl to look up, he suggested "Try again."
The man knew who she was? Powergirl shouldn't have been so surprised and yet recently she hadn't seen many of her old acquaintances hanging around. She was about to try and remember if she'd spoken to him before, but Haze's reaction threw all that out the window.
"What? Daddy??!" The woman stammered, before putting a finger on her temple and scratching it in abject bewilderment. If it was true then that certainly explained why Haze was so quick to attempt maiming before simple incapacitation. Still, the man's reaction (and what was with that too? Did he have a soft spot for kids or what?) proved that it was at best a case of mistaken identity. Or perhaps even wishful thinking.
"uhm Haze, I don't think that's who you're looking for" She added. Walking across the glass strewn pavement and getting a look at the man's handiwork in the process. She kind of envied it. But having worked with Kal for so long she knew she could never be that ruthless.
"Look, Ladies." Midnighter pressed the heel of his boot into the back of the man's armpit with a satisfying crunch of cartridge. "I'm working right now; maybe we can do this meet and great some other time ... but if you want to help, the guy has a kid that doesn't belong to him tied up in a storage locker just a block away."
(OOC: Sorry about my late reply. I was stuck in Arkham City...)
Haze looked up, confused, why would her father deny her? She blinked and the silhouette that was so similar to her father's shifted just a little and came into it's own.
"o-oh..." She let go and took a wide step backward, forcing her arms at her sides and her hands into fists. "Sorry, dude. Thought you were someone else..."
She tried to keep looking up at Midnighter, but found it hard. She faced him, but her gaze slide to the side and she swallowed hard though she hoped none of the supers around her noticed.
Her fists were so tight in her gloves she knew her knuckles were white under the leather. "We'll get the kid, if you're sure you've got everything handled here."
"Never been mistaken for someone's dad though." Midnighter said with a little smile, not minding.
"Anyway, I agree- the two of you will be better received. Take the kid to the doctor- see if they have family left, and get 'em signed up for some therapy."
As the man under his boot whimpered, trying to move while the heroes were talking, Midnighter turned his attention back to his prey, snapping his arms in three placed, "Don't worry, haven't forgotten about you."
The disappointment was obvious. Powergirl didn't need super vision to see that Haze had been expecting someone completely different. Well...maybe not completely. But she was handling it like a trooper so the woman decided they could wait and talk about it later. In the meantime, she could already see the kid in the direction he'd pointed and so with a quick nod she picked Haze up under her arms and swung her around so she could hang on while the woman turned and took flight down the street.
The nagging Kal in the back of her head said that she should really prevent him from doing any more damage to that guy, but the bigger part of her managed to convince herself that the trapped child was more important than the guy who'd wronged them.
