So it seemed like black had been a good choice, then, considering the overall color scheme. She liked the look of the place - it was elegant, without being trying too hard. If she were one for any sort of clubbing or this type of place, she could see herself here. As it was, looking around had another purpose - she needed to find this Jackie fellow as soon as possible. She wanted out of this spotlight and back to New York quickly.
It seemed like she was in luck, however. The waitress obviously hadn't known Evey was searching for this man, but it was definitely a great help. She found that Mr. Estacado was a lot different than she'd expected - he didn't have the look of a toughened gangster.
And as she mingled closer to the pair, just happening to overhear some news about his shipment, her lips curved into a smile. Bingo. Just what she'd wanted to hear. Now to see if she could figure out what that shipment was about.
A convenient pillar hid her location as she pretended to enjoy the drink she'd picked up from one of the waitresses, all ears for what was going to be said next. So there was a shipment coming in from Metropolis - that sounded a bit sketchy. What could he need that couldn't be bought in Gotham?
S'all good. Real life and lack of inspiration happens.jackieestacadoNovember 19 2011, 22:46:30 UTC
He thought about the shipment, all the expensive goods strewn about the freeway for anyone to see. That could cause problems for him. He squeezed the dip where his nose met his forehead. He didn't need the headache.
"...er," murmured the waitress. "What would you like me to do Mr. Estacado?"
He'd have to handle this delicately. "Just so we're clear, we're talking about the specialty items right?"
"Yes sir."
"Damn. How bad was the accident? Was anyone hurt?"
"Apparently there was some sort of..." The waitress leaned in and lowered her voice. Jackie listened to the details and then she pulled away. "And then boom."
"Boom?" Jackie repeated.
"Maybe they thought--"
"They could have thought a lot of things. All of them wrong."
Specialty items? Evey couldn't even imagine what an ex-gangster could be transporting that he considered 'special'. Though from what the waitress was saying, the accident seemed to be one that would attract a lot of media attention. She would have to get in touch with her sources and see if she could find raw footage from the highway and find out exactly what these items were.
Mr. Estacado seemed rather concerned, and when she heard the 'boom' - so was Evey. Something that was that loud and that big - that could hurt civilians! Bombs were not something to play with, unless you knew what you were doing; and even then, it was wasn't something she wanted to get involved in.
She took another tentative sip of her drink.
"There has to be more to it than that," she whispered to herself, wondering who 'they' could be and what thoughts they might be having that were wrong. If she thought she could reveal herself, she would - but best to let this conversation finish before she approached Mr. Estacado himself. Naturally she would present herself as just another party guest.
Evey thought maybe she heard something snicker from within the shadows by her ear. It was probably just weird acoustics.
The waitress apologized again and seemed glad he didn't shoot the messenger.
"Thanks Carrie, for letting me know." He dismissed her with a wave, she nodded, and returned to her job.
Stress. Maybe it was time for a smoke break. Already.
Jackie headed towards Evey's direction. She was likely considering approaching him in a casual way when another snicker hissed near her shoulder. Was she being watched?
She definitely was getting the feeling that there was something she was missing here - but Evey wasn't overly aware of or able to attune to the supernatural. The first time, she really did chalk it up to the weird shape of the room and a passerby, leaning against her pillar and sipping her drink. Curious, that he would just leave it at that.
And where was he head now? Close to her? Feigning that she'd been scanning the room for a friend, she allowed her eyes to rest on him and then light up - as if he was the one she'd been looking for all along! Now, to just create a fake persona and she would be all set.
Then she heard the next snicker and turned her head, distracted -- what the hell was that?! Between the two of them, she judged the laughter to be more confusing and more of a threat at the moment. She could always find him later - but this ..
It's natural for her to be wary and paranoid. She didn't do supernatural. In fact, she didn't even really do fighting. That was always V's area of expertise - and in this place, she had always been more of an information gatherer. The paranormal was something she had no experience with - that sort of thing didn't exist in her world, even though there were many other things that were horribly wrong.
When she heard his voice behind her, she jumped.
"I thought .. I thought I heard something. Must have been the wind," she covered, lamely, her voice struggling for some sort of calm and clearly accented - there was no hiding that she was English, her American accent had always been rubbish.
"I was here to speak to you, Mr. Estacado - just about to come over, actually. I'm from a blog online and my readers would love a few quotes."
He dismissed her concerns with a grin and a shrug. "Maybe I missed a few gaps when refurbishing the building. I'll look into that." He himself had a glass filled with something amber. He took a quick drink.
"A blog?" he sounded interested. "Have I heard of it?" He really should hold out for the Daily Planet or the Bugle or the Jack Ryder show. On the other hand, sometimes the little guy needed a boost.

He need never know that she heard any of this.

Jackie, Jackie, Jackie....She was watching, Jackie...She was listening.
At least they were being their version of subtle. He decided it was time to intervine.
"Expecting someone?" He asked Evey, cooly.
