The first season of OUAT is pretty good. It has an intriguing backstory that slowly unfolds, fabulous costumes, the pacing is good and of course it has Robert Carlyle, which makes all the other actors try extra hard to try to at least keep up with him. Episode 12, Skin Deep, is easily the best episode they've ever done, again in large part thanks to Robert Carlyle. Nym's epic fic uses this episode as a jumping off point for an AU that takes the backstory in a different direction from the way it went in the show.
The show really starts to slide from Season 2 onwards, though, and not just because the writers decided to change the direction of the season halfway through after they got the rights to Peter Pan. A lot of the most important character stuff happens offscreen, and they largely reset the story with a different Big Bad each half season. I stopped caring about the characters partway through season 3, when the writers made a decision that ripped the core out of the show's established narrative.
I still like Season 1, though, especially Skin Deep.
