Recent news events made me think about how Rodney would react.....

ETA: And neevebrody has a BJ Friday that prompted a follow-up Small Consolation (on my LJ)

Rodney started as the laptop in front of his was closed with a loud snick.

"Rodney, go. To your room. Sleep there," Radek commanded gently. "Or you will fall asleep on your computer and spam us all again."

Rodney flushed. He had accidentally sent hundreds of emails to everyone in the Atlantis system the previous week when he had started a memo and, in falling asleep, had ended up sending the half-written memo out to everyone. Repeatedly. He and Miko had spent most of the next day cleaning up after it.

"Rodney," Radek's voice carried a warning. "Go."

Rodney blinked and sighed. "Okay, okay," he agreed. He shut down the other laptops he was working on. "Don't let anyone do anything stupid," he called after Radek's retreating figure. Radek cheerfully waved the finger at him.

Rodney really didn't want to go to his room and now that he was half awake, he found he was hungry. He wandered through the mess, grabbed a couple of sandwiches and an apple - fresh fruit was popular now that they could get it while they were on Earth.

He shuffled through the halls, looking out at the sun shining through the Golden Gate bridge. They needed to go home, Pegasus, soon. He hoped Woolsey was making some headway on that.

Rodney took the long way, knowing he was depressed and not knowing what to do about it. Jennifer had finally realized that Rodney wasn't going to change to what she wanted in a boyfriend and given him the "It's not you, it's me" speech. Generally, in Rodney's experience, it had been the "It's you, not me" so this was something of an improvement. But when offered an opportunity to consult at the SGC while they were on Earth, Jennifer had grabbed it and left.

Getting the Earth news in real time had its disadvantages. He had read the news on his Internet feeds and seen the announcements on the television satellite he had hacked almost as soon as the city had stopped rocking in the water. It was too depressing to think about and had made a bad month even worse.

He wandered into his room, looking up at the sound of someone in his bathroom.

"Who's there?" he called.

"Just me," floated back the voice of John Sheppard.

"What?" he demanded. "Don't you have your own bathroom?"

"Shower's out of order," the voice came back. "Sorry, thought you'd be working."

Rodney dropped the sandwiches on the desk. "Radek threw me out. I wasn't doing anything productive," Rodney admitted.

Noises in the bathroom and John stepped into the doorway. Rodney's brain went offline.

"You... I.... Umm…" Rodney stopped his babbling by sheer willpower. John stood there, dressed only in a towel. Not that he hadn't seen John mostly naked in any number of the off world missions they had, there was something... different...

"Naked!" Rodney blurted.

John looked down at the towel clinging precariously around his hips. "Only way to take a shower, Rodney," John drawled. He leaned against the doorframe.

Rodney didn't really hear the answer, he was watching a couple of drops of water slowly make their way down John's torso. John didn't make a move to do anything about them and Rodney watched them approach the line of the towel in fascination.

"See anything you like?" John asked.

Something in the tone made Rodney pay attention. It wasn't snippy, it was more... hesitant. Something clicked.

"John?" Rodney exclaimed. Running out of words, some genius he was, he waved his hand between them. "Me?"

John nodded slightly, as if he was afraid of Rodney rejecting him.

Rodney found a couple of brain cells that he could get working. "Why now?"

John gave what Rodney had classified as "John Sheppard shrug #12" - the one that meant I don't know but it seems like a good idea. The one that was most likely to have Teyla glaring at him as she tried to fix whatever trouble they were in.

"John...."

John shuffled in place, obviously not knowing what to do with his hands. "It's just, well, you've had kind of a crappy time lately and, you know, I wasn't going to while you and Jennifer were... together," John stuttered. "She's gone and the news yesterday was.... well, it's not fair, anyway, and I thought that maybe…. well, I like you and thought we could..." John ground to a halt, out of words.

It was the stark honesty behind the half sentences that convinced Rodney that John was telling the truth. "Really?" Rodney squeaked. No, he didn't squeak but it was kinda squeak-ish. Whatever.

John nodded.

Rodney took a step closer to John and hesitatingly reached out. He lightly drew a finger down the path of the drop. John shivered slightly at the touch.

John reached out to reel Rodney in closer. "I'm sorry about the Nobel," John murmured.

"Digital photography, my ass," Rodney grumbled automatically. "I've done more in a week..."

"Shhh..." John whispered against Rodney's lips as he brought them together.
