So Beautiful, So Clear
Sequel to
'You Could Be Happy' I thought they deserved a somewhat happy ending, and all you lovely reviewers deserved something less depressing. This one is 613 words long, based on Snow Patrol's song 'Headlights'. Also unbeta'd.
Two years John waited. Two years of feeling dead inside, of hating himself for the decisions he’d made and the actions he’d taken to complete those decisions. He regretted it every second of ever minute of every day, if he could take it back he would, but life was never so forgiving. So when the rumour mill was whispering words like falling apart and divorce in conjunction with Rodney and Cassandra, he couldn’t help but feel slightly optimistic.
He and Rodney had not been on the best of terms after the wedding, what with John crying silently as the best man for the whole of Atlantis base to see. For the first week after, everyone avoided John like the plague, they knew something was wrong they just didn’t know what, and when anyone dared to come too close to John, they were pushed away with a glare and clenched fists.
Things had gotten a little better as time went on, John drifted further and further away from all he had once called friends, while Rodney and Cassandra walked and talked and acted like the perfect happy couple. But things were changing, the couple were caught fighting more often, in the lab, in a corridor, in the control room, everywhere actually. And it wasn’t the normal fighting of couples, it was outraged yelling and heated glares. John wasn’t sure what the reason for it was, but for once he hoped the rumours were true, and he couldn’t help feeling selfish at that.
A month after the rumours had started and it was official, Rodney and Cassandra were getting a divorce. The announcement spread like wildfire through the base and within and hour everyone knew. John tried hard to hide the joy he felt as it was confirmed, he’d be there for Rodney, he’d be his best friend again, he’d help him through the whole way. Because John had experience with divorce.
John waited, he waited for the divorce to be finalised, he waited for Rodney to seek him out like he knew he would, he’d waited two years, a few months more wasn’t going to matter. The small glow of warmth and hope that had started in his heart when he had heard the rumours had changed from a candle flicker to bright headlights. He could feel it in his blood and bones, they were meant to be together, and with the divorce finalised, Rodney would see it too.
It took a few weeks longer than John had thought it would, but Rodney finally showed. He bustled into John’s room without even a ‘hello’ and then stopped, awkwardly fidgeting with his hands, wedding ring gone. John was patient, he could wait for Rodney to say what he needed to say, he’d be a shoulder to cry on if that was all Rodney wanted or needed. He wasn’t shocked to see tears spring to Rodney’s eyes, overflowing down his cheeks.
‘I’m sorry Rodney,’ he said sincerely, and he meant it, John was sorry for everything. The pain he had heaped Rodney with, the heartbreak, the unfairness of everything that had happened. He was sorry.
It only took Rodney two steps to bring him into John’s personal space, radiating heat and misery. When Rodney brushed his lips against John’s, it was as if a switch had been flipped in his head, he gripped tightly at Rodney’s arms, tongue seeking out the warmth of Rodney’s own. He bit Rodney’s lip and tasted blood, Rodney kissed him just as ferociously. John licked his way into Rodney’s mouth, tears and blood mingling. When at last he pulled away and licked his lips, they tasted of life, love, and forgiveness.
