So I got a brief and unexpected call from Andrea tonight. During the first week of basic training, she was repeatedly having breathing problems, and they think she has some sort of lung problem. She's always had some trouble breathing during strenuous activity, but it was a lot worse with the rigors of basic training.
Basically, it's about 90% likely that she's going to be discharged as a result of this. The other 10% would be a scenario with her being discharged temporarily, with a chance to re-apply in a year or two - hopefully with a much more peaceful world climate by then. So there's a pretty damn good chance that she's going to be back home for good by the end of January, possibly even sooner.
The lung problem is certainly something that needs to be looked into, but it's not exactly a new problem so that's not a big deal. And this will throw a kink in her academic future, since this was supposed to be the path to paying for college.
But despite that, I can't help but selfishly be relieved. I was looking at her being gone until the end of September, then home for all of 45 days, then off again for 6 months or more, deployed to who knows where. She would then be deployed to a site of the government's choice for 6 months out of each year for 6-7 years after that. It just seems like no matter what obstacles we may face here, there's no way they could be as difficult as they would've been with her in the military.
I hoped and prayed that something would happen to make this whole ordeal easier to handle. I didn't expect something like this, but damn...I am so thankful. I know she's going to be disappointed and probably a bit angry at having to completely rework her academic future, but I will be more than happy to help her through it in every way I can. I'm just relieved and elated that she'll be here at all.
:) I love her so much...
