The Businessman and the high-class hooker/scientist

John is working for the family business. He's married, but the marriage is broken, his wife is having an affair because he doesn't care (and possibly to finally get some emotional response from him). One day a friend tells him, "You do know that your wife is having an affair?" and John silently acknowledges it. Then to John's greater surprise (because he's cultivated the kind of friendships where people know not to actually ask him the questions he doesn't dare ask himself) the friend asks if he's gay. He's so shocked that he doesn't deny it. He's never been with a man, but he's been thinking about it, trying to ignore those feelings as they don't fit into the image of what a Sheppard should be
