Team Interview: perspi

Name: perspi
Team: War!

Let's talk about: perspi!

1. How long have you been writing fan fiction and/or making fan art and/or whatever else (vids, knitted goods, pornographic gingerbread cookies)?

I got into fanfiction in 2006, in the House fandom first, then I got into SGA in 2007. I remember gorging on SGA fic during those hazy first few months following my daughter's arrival--I read on the laptop while she was nursing, and had to change the room around every couple weeks because my neck would hurt, depending on which side of the chair I had the table.

2. Have you participated or are you participating in any other fandoms? House is really my only other fandom, although I haven't written much there, lately.

3. What fanwork are you most proud of? Or, what is your favourite of your fanworks? (links, please!) OH MY GOODNESS, there are very many. And I like linking, so here goes:

What I'm really proud of:
  • No Little Charity: The longest fic I've ever written by myself, a Housefic that I wrote while surfing the first-trimester hormones of pregnancy, a fic that explores what House's pain really means by giving it to Wilson.
  • Aftershocks: A House fic that started as a 'hey, wouldn't it be cool if?' conversation among a few writers, responding to a story by nightdog_barks. It turned into an Epic and the black_cigarette Collective, a collaboration of writers that has enriched my life immeasurably.
  • A World Called Catastrophe: The first SGA fic I started writing; I'm very pleased with the way I captured John here.
  • The three_fathers stories (all on the community, come join in!): Beneath Your Heart and Within Your Arms: I am rather proud of some of the dialogue in these.
And for favorites?
4. As far as creative processes go, what type of writer/artist are you? Do you create an outline/find photo references/make maps, etc., or do you jump in and go with the flow?

I'm very much a go-with-the-flow writer. I feel like the characters 'talk' and I am more of a transcriber--I tend to 'see' scenes in my head, and sometimes they're not in a linear order for the fic and I have to work a little to see how to get from one scene to another. Sometimes I just 'see' one scene, and I can build the fic around that scene or image.

When I do make outlines, they tend to be very vague and scripty--like, "scene where Rodney finds out John actually owns the chocolate shop goes here" and "then the scene where Rodney figures out John's flirting and gets kissed goes here."

5. Where can interested readers/viewers find more of your work? (homepage, LJ fic index, etc.)

I don't have a fic index, but my House fic is here and my SGA fic is here.

6. Do you write original fiction (poetry, screenplays)? Do you create original art (comics, photographs, quilts, wedding cakes)? Care to share?

I do, occasionally, create quilts. (This was my first one, for a seasonal series. So far I've done summer and winter.)

(note that baby Z does not look like this right now--she was six months old in this picture and is now two. It's the best picture I've got right now of the fireworks quilt--which is a stack-n-whack and I love the kaleidoscope effect of it. The cat still looks the same.)

7. How are you so awesome?

*snorfles laughter*
*shakes head*
*waves us on, still chuckling*

Let's talk about: SGA!

8. What do you enjoy most about SGA and/or SGA fandom?

I adore SGA for its potential--it gave us some great characters, some great 'What If?'s, some great worldbuilding potential. I adore SGA fandom because I can read stories that actually realize that potential, far better than the creators of the show did.

9. Why do you ship McKay/Sheppard? What draws you to the pairing, what do you like and dislike? Favourite scenes or episodes? Quotes? Screencaps? What other SGA pairings do you ship?

I like McKay/Sheppard because of their banter, because of the way they get along and don't, the way John doesn't leave anyone behind but can't actually tell them that and the way Rodney is too competitive to let John be the only brave one. They work together, and I love that.

One of my favorite scenes between them is in The Storm, the one with John saying, "And by brisk you mean far." "And by walk I mean run."

I'm multifictional, though--I adore a good OT4, and I'll read most any pairing.

10. Why did you choose to join Team War?

I pulled a John Sheppard and flipped a coin. That, and I'm scrappy.

11. C'mon, you know you wanna! Just a bit of squee about your Match fic? [good example: 'very proud of my second scene' / bad example: 'When Rodney kisses John after they find out the butler did it'.]

I had an idea, and a bit of a plot, even, and then the plotbunny for this one BIT ME and I wrote it fast fast and it felt so good to be really hit by a bolt of writerly inspiration and then! THEN! There's an image in there that just makes me go all hot and bothered and gooey, all at once. *sigh*

12. What are your 'tells'? How can a fic of yours be spotted in the wild? (again, go ahead and make origami out of the truth!)

I'm not sure I have any 'tells'--but perhaps that perception comes from my experience with the black_cigarette Collective, where our writing styles have blended into some new gestalt. I know I'm not big on introspective writing--having the POV character musing on what he or she is feeling or thinking. I much prefer to write dialogue and action.

From taste_is_sweet: I love the palpable sense of warmth and connection you have between all of the main (team Shep) characters. It's obvious that you really enjoy these people and how they relate to one another.

My question: do you have favourite characters among these four? And/or favourite ones to write together?

Ooooh, I DO love all of these characters together, and I really love to think of them as family. My experience with the ronon_love ficathon got me to really adore Ronon as a character, and I adore writing him--he has so much more than what the writers on the show ever gave him. Then again, I love Teyla and John and Rodney, too, so. Don't make me choose?

From emeraldsword: I've decided to go with random, because I've been trying for insightful but I'm unlikely to pull it off.

SO.

Red or blue and why?

Tea or coffee and why?

You can answer either, both or neither, I don't mind :-)

RED! Because I love attention. And stuff with retro-cherries on it.

and TEA! ALWAYS TEA! I drink it with milk and sugar, almost always. Earl Grey and Irish Breakfast during the day, peppermint at night, I love it. My Mr. drinks coffee, so I get the heavenly smell without having to drink the stuff--I find it entirely too bitter.

Thanks for reading this far, and I'm always up for questions--you see how I like to ramble!
