Name:
propinquitineTeam: Peace!
Let's talk about:
propinquitine!
1. How long have you been writing fan fiction and/or making fan art and/or whatever else (vids, knitted goods, pornographic gingerbread cookies)?
Either 17 months, or almost a decade. The first thing I ever wrote and posted was a post-ep to the S4 finale of SGA back in March '08, but there's definitely some, um, Harry Potter-inspired fan poetry lurking on my hard drive from high school, and way back in middle school I was mentally vidding a Mulder/Scully 'shipper vid to Celine Dione's "Because You Loved Me". So sad that these fannish endeavors were never shared with the world.
3. What fanwork are you most proud of? Or, what is your favourite of your fanworks? (links, please!)
I'm pretty fond of
Lost Horizon, which I wrote for an
artword challenge at the end of last year (partnering with the lovely
highonstargate. I think most of my fondness for it comes from the excellent back-and-forth I had with
beadattitude, who beta-ed it and really helped me shape it into an actual story, instead of just a bunch of scenes.
Visual Acuity is another
artword fic that I loved working on, for the same reason -- I ended up with a veritable committee of betas, and partnered with
le_mot_mo, who was just brilliant to work with. Plus, after all of that work on the story, there's gorgeous art, too!
5. Where can interested readers/viewers find more of your work? (homepage, LJ fic index, etc.)
At my LJ, under my
fic tag, and eventually over on
my page at the Archive of Our Own, once I find the time to actually upload to it.
7. How are you so awesome?
Years of careful study. Now the awkward, that comes naturally.
Let's talk about: SGA!
8. What do you enjoy most about SGA and/or SGA fandom?
My favorite thing about SGA is its amazing potential as a source for stories, and my favorite thing about the fandom is how we take that potential and explore it to its fullest. (Sometimes with sexy results, even!)
9. Why do you ship McKay/Sheppard? What draws you to the pairing, what do you like and dislike? Favourite scenes or episodes? Quotes? Screencaps? What other SGA pairings do you ship?
Because, first and foremost, they're friends, in a deeper, more real way than I think either of them has ever experienced before. It starts with them just enjoying spending time together, and eventually they come to rely on one another so much that John's greatest fear is failing Rodney and losing him, while when Rodney's losing his mind the idea he holds onto longest is that John is the person he needs to make him feel safe and comforted. I just -- gah! That is epic romance, right there!
Some of my favorite moments include all of Echoes and their whale dates, any time John's eyes go all shiny with how much he cares for Rodney, Rodney's saunter down the gateroom stairs (and into John's dreams, sigh!) in Doppelganger, and the following exchange from The Storm:
Weir: The city can handle that?
McKay: Yes. Theoretically.
Sheppard: Like dinosaurs turning into birds theoretically or theory of relativity theoretically?
McKay: What? Uh, somewhere in between.
That's it, right there: John is a total oddball dorkface, this catches Rodney's attention, and he can totally speak that language.
10. Why did you choose to join Team Peace?
Because I know these two will never lead boring lives, and I love thinking about what they'll get up to when they have their choice of what to do. Plus, I'm a sucker for happy endings.
11. C'mon, you know you wanna! Just a bit of squee about your Match fic? [good example: 'very proud of my second scene' / bad example: 'When Rodney kisses John after they find out the butler did it'.]
I did too much research (and not enough writing yet, eep!), so I'm pretty sure that half the puns I've worked in won't translate as such to most readers, but I'm glad they're there.
12. What are your 'tells'? How can a fic of yours be spotted in the wild? (again, go ahead and make origami out of the truth!)
I love dialogue, puns, and em-dashes. Most of my stories don't contain much plot beyond, "John is maybe sad, or something, but Rodney is there, and then they make out."
Question from
kassrachel: What's your favorite place -- real or imaginary (or both!)?
I love DC, which is a good thing, since I'm moving there in a week, and Crater Lake in Oregon is so startlingly beautiful that it seems imaginary. (Plus: it's a lake in a collapsed volcano -- how awesome is that?)
Question from
altyronsmaker: If you could be any character in any of your fandoms, who would it be and why?
Ooooh, good one! My first instinct is to say Dana Scully or Hermione Granger, but that's kind of cheating since I'm just picking the ones I'm most like already. I think it would be fun to be Bertie Wooster for a bit: I'd get to be a good sort of chap, have a few adventures but never be in any real danger, and have an elegant valet constantly shimmering in to save me from the soup and stave off any accidental engagements. Quite nice, that!
Question from
velocitygrass: You also signed up for
cliche_bingo (yay!). What is your favorite McShep cliché?
Oh, man, I love me some "Oh noes, we have to share a bed now" fic (I think the cliche square is "sleeping arrangements"?). "Huddling for warmth" is good in a pinch, but in sleeping-arrangements fic, you don't even get the hypothermia excuse for the accidental nighttime cuddles -- it's pure, unadulterated, "my subconscious wants me to spoon with you" joy.
Question from
chkc: What kind of stories do you like to write/read best? Long plotty fics? or itty bitty snippets?
Also, randomly: what's your caffienated drink of choice? (Coffee, tea, hot chocolate...) :)
I think I like writing
mcsmooches best -- they're that perfect blend of no-plot-necessary (but if one develops, that's good, too!), writable in a sitting or two, high ratio of fic-to-John/Rodney-makeouts, and they have a deadline (which are the only way I get things done). I'll read pretty much any length fic, if I have the time, and I love that the variety in this fandom means that there's always something I have time for.
I started drinking coffee when I started doing research for my thesis in undergrad, and it's seen me through every academic and professional endeavour since then. :-) But I love tea, as well -- there's such a variety, and I'm a fan of the many tea-making accoutrements.
Question from
deltacephei: How many files are in your WIP folder? How many of those are SGA? And how many will probably never be finished?
My problem with WIPs is that I keep documents titled things like "ficnotes" or "bits" or "some talking" that have six or seven or twelve plot bunnies, snippets, or lines of dialogue hiding inside. I'm not sure how in-progress something has to be to count as a WIP, but if the threshold is, say, multiple paragraphs, then I've got 9 or 10 WIPS, all SGA (but two are crossovers/fusions), 5 or 6 of which might see the light of day.
I've got one story that's just killing me: started it last summer, it's 3/4 completed and already fairly long, totally planned on finishing it, but just the other day I realized that I used pretty much exactly the same plot in a story I wrote earlier this year. So now I'm wondering if the world really needs two "John's vision goes weird in an interesting way, and then he and Rodney make out" fics from me, or if the one will suffice. :-)
Well, dang, that was a lot of me talking about myself. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!
