Cloverfield is like a good zombie movie: it's not really about what you think it's about. I mean, yes, it is about a monster destroying New York City. But it's really about a guy finally understanding what really matters to him. It's a shame it takes a giant whatever smashing all sorts of landmarks to get him to that point, but us guys can be pretty dense.
The shaky cam can be a bit much (sorry Aubrie), and there's a little too much monster fan service at the end, but other than that, it's an extremely well crafted movie. There are a lot of little visual gags and commentary that work well, and the sound design is awesome. There is never a character who breaks the found footage set-up by giving tons of exposition, which is smart storytelling (but as a nerd wanting answers to every little detail, is frustrating). I'd love to see another film deal with the same event from a different perspective (a foot soldier's?), but done in the same style (helmet mounted camera?).
So, if motion sickness isn't a concern, go see it. It's a great way to spend 8 bucks and a couple of hours.
