Frank was sat at his desk, tilting his cup upwards, tapping the bottom to help the last of the ice from his drink slide down into his mouth. After watching the ice glide down and hearing the tiny clink as it his front teeth, Frank realised that there was something seriously wrong with this ice cube. Well, he guessed it wasn’t actually an ice cube, as such.
Earlier this morning Frank had been searching through his kitchen for something, when he stumbled across a brightly coloured flexible ice cube tray, complete with heart shaped hollows from Ikea. He hadn’t used it yet, and he didn’t actually know why he had brought it in the first place, either. After pulling the tray out from the cluttered cupboard, Frank filled it up and set it in the freezer, completely forgetting about what he was originally searching for.
Just as he spat the abnormally large ice heart into his palm, the phone beside him rang.
“Yello?” Frank answered, holding the phone up to his ear with one hand, and cupping the ice heart in the other.
“Frank? Oh thank god you’re there, it’s Gerard, by the way.” The caller blurted.
Frank rolled his eyes affectionately at his friend’s anxious antics, though he didn’t expect anything less from such a worrywart.
“I gathered.” Frank smiled, picking his feet up to rest them on the desktop.
“Yeah well, you’ll never believe what just happened.”
“Hmm?” Frank’s interest wandered as he studied the abnormal ice heart resting in his palm, whilst Gerard continued to talk. Frank worked out that the reason why the heart was so large was because two of the hearts had fused together whilst sitting frozen in the bottom of his cup.
“…so I thought that maybe you could come over here and help me work out what happened to it, and then maybe after that we could, ya know, go out. For coffee! I mean go out for coffee, or something, but if you’re too busy then that’s okay, I just - ”
“What?” Frank yelped, jerking to attention after zoning out for most of the conversation.
“I, uh n-never mind, I’ll just use some glue or something and then maybe - yeh. Well I’ve got to go, bye.” Gerard said quickly, hanging up immediately after his last word was stuttered.
Frank blinked a couple of times, looking at the phone, partly wondering what the hell Gerard needed to use glue for, but mostly wondering why he was so nervous about asking him out for coffee. Frank quickly replayed what he could remember of the conversation in his head. But no surely, of course he didn’t mean it like that. Did he?
“Damnit.” Frank groaned, dropping the phone back onto its holder. Turning his attention back to the ice heart once again, the only thing found was a couple of cool drops pooling in the cracks of his palm, dripping onto the desk below. “Damnit” he whispered again.
Turns out that a chance wasn’t the only thing that’d slipped through his fingers today.
