Rock Sound coverstars talk us through their new record 'Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys'. Check back Friday for the second part of the feature.
I hear it a tiny bit in Vampires during and right after the chorus, before the next verse comes in? And I've always heard it in To The End - the sort of thrumming beat - and in Sharpest Lives there's an electronic beat as well, but I was afraid to mention it for ages for fear of fans yelling at me. XD
I think it's not so much dance-y as dance-y in comparison to their normal stuff... but I think you can hear a bit of the influence? :)
I dunno, those songs (well not Vampires as a whole, the part before the chorus you mentioned) definitely have 'bouncier' beats, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that they were attempted dance tracks. Especially lyrically. If anything on their older records was remotely close to dance on beat alone, I'd say it was Headfirst For Halos.
I mean, they wrote them, so who am I to say. But at the same time so much of what they've been saying lately has been so in contrast to everything they used to say, that I have to question. One or two things are going on: 1) That there are different people due to life changes now, but are trying to justify their new perspective and make it easier for fans to swallow by saying they were always like this, just not able to express it. Or 2) that this really is who they always were and they were phonies in the past.
Or maybe Frank was talking out of his ass. Or maybe I'm an idiot. Meh, it's just music, this is just a band, so either way it doesn't matter much :P
Oh go away anon no one was talking to you. But for clarification's sake, I was talking about how I don't really believe anything they say (in other words, that the songs that Frank mentioned were attempted dance tracks) because they are either liars now or phonies before. Saying 'this is who we always were' doesn't really add up for me, but then again, I don't overly care, I was just pointing it out.
The way I see it... they weren't being phony about the dark imagery and how messed up they were before. It's pretty well documented how true that was. It was pretty clearly, obviously genuine.
And all the ~color and happiness now is pretty clearly and obviously genuine as well, it's not like they're lying about not still being depressed.
....So they changed. And also came out from behind the metaphors. Which may be harder to stomach for some (I hate change), but it rings true for me.
I don't think he means those songs are attempted dance tracks, just that they'd used some dance-ey (even electronic in the case of The Sharpest Lives) elements before for those songs, but had never dared go all the way and do a real dance song. There's stuff they've always liked and thought of doing before but never dared until now. Doesn't mean they didn't like what they did before just like it doesn't mean they'd never liked what they used for this album until now. There's a moment for everything.
Frank described Sharpest Lives as "an electro-rock dancey song" in 2006. Whether you hear it as a dance track or not, them describing it that way is hardly something they just came up with in 2010.
Mod here: please do not talk to our anon commenters that way. We have anon commenting on for a reason, and we want everyone to feel like they can comment on these posts, whether they have a Livejournal account or not. I understand that the anon comment you got was dismissive, but being anon had nothing to do with it. Thanks.
Generally more #1? I think they've changed a lot, and I think they've been misinterpreted in the past... they've always relied heavily on method acting. But they've said a few times they they were legit messed up and angry at the world back then, and they were hiding behind metaphors to show it. Now they're happy and no longer terrified of everything, and so they can emerge as just themselves, the people they always wanted to be rather than the people they were stuck as
( ... )
With The Sharpest Lives, I even remember them saying it was the closest to a dance song they'd recorded, and I agree (before this album of course). And yeah, I've always thought 'To The End' had a dance beat, though -I think- it doesn't have any electronic elements. It's harder for me to find it in Vampires but yeah, I guess just the drum bit for moments.
Um..?
