Just about the last place you'd expect to hear a My Chemical Romance song is on American Idol, but that appears to be where the band's new single, "Sing," is headed. Promos for Season 10 have already started airing -- the first featuring all nine Idol winners and the song "Chances" by Five for Fighting premiered on the Ryan Seacrest Youtube channel -- and THR hears My Chem's latest is one of several songs that will serve as the music for a new set of ads (according to a Fox rep, a final decision on promo music has yet to be made).
"We don't know for sure," MCR frontman Gerard Way tells THR. "But any kind of infiltration is great, so the offer was pretty much a no-brainer. It's something a lot of people are going to see and they'll hear the music which is the most important thing." Adds guitarist Frank Lero Iero, "I think it would be really cool if an actual band was heard on the biggest music TV show."
An unlikely (and awesome) choice, but could this signal a more rocking Idol to come? After all, the show has a new partner in Interscope Geffen A&M, home to iconic artists like U2 and Eminem (MCR is signed to Warner Bros.), and a rock star judge in Steven Tyler. We'll know soon enough. The judges just wrapped the final round of callbacks. Next stop: Hollywood week!
On Thursday night, MCR debuted "Sing" to throngs of ecstatic fans on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Worth noting: one of their backup singers was none other than Vonda Shepard, of Ally McBeal fame. Check out the performance below.
MCR's fourth studio album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, comes out Nov. 22.
